Photos of toolboxes?
Looking for a truck-bed toolbox for my '72 K10 Super LWB. Can't decide what would look most "original", style-wise. Anyone have good photos of trucks with toolboxes? Just want to get an idea of what different colors, materials, etc. look like in our trucks! Thanks!

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
My truck had a diamond plated tool box (tractor supply brand) on it when I bought it.
Left it on for about a year and finally took it off....I think it looks better without one, but if you need one for locking stuff up, i don't think it looked too bad. I just wasn't using it at all, so there was no need to keep it. I think they also sell ones that are even with the sides so you can't see it from the side. Here are a few pics, with and then without

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
IMO smooth steel boxes look best on older trucks.

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
A friend ask me to paint a tool box to match his Ford so it wouldn't be noticeable. That was just too boring.

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Thanks for the photos so far!
I don't mind the looks of the over-rail type boxes, and I will be using the box - tools, fluids, spare parts, gear for mountain excursions, etc. I agree with projectking, the smooth steel boxes do look best in older trucks. LedZepp, I wish I could find something vintage like yours - I've been looking on CraigsList, but CL here on the Western Slope of Colorado is pretty dang sparse. Blue/72, I like the white box. I figured either silver (to match the bumpers/trim) or white (to match the paint)... I'm leaning towards white. Anyone know of a company making a white steel box, stock? I see an awful lot of polished diamond plate out there. EDIT: Well, Google is helpful, I searched for "white steel truck toolbox". Man, some of those WeatherGuard ones are pricey! Anyone used a Delta box? Quality level? I know you get what you pay for...

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
The quality of Weather Guard/ Knaack is very hard to beat. But the cost is a lot more.

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Weather guard/knaack are the best money can buy and well worth it. Not sure how it would fit our trucks but knaack makes a low wide job box that sits on bed floor....

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Stu Pidd, dang, that's a score.
Ol Blue K20, Projectking, I hear you. Usually I'm the guy buying the really nice stuff because I'm into quality. But I'm not using this for work, or every day, or leaving it out in the weather all the time, so I'm not sure I can justify spending $700 on a toolbox! About half that would be my max for this particular part of the project...

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
I got mine on CL for $20. I see them in the junkyard routinely, might be another source to consider. Beware they are HEAVY.

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Between the weight and the bulk they might be two-person jobbers! Or, at least, two skinny person (like me) jobbers.
Looked into the Delta white steel boxes. They do not get good reviews! But I found that DeeZee makes a white steel box, about $350, and made here in the USA. Will probably go that route if I don't find something used in the next couple weeks...

Nice truck. I would go with a white one-smooth.

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Here's a couple of pictures of the one I made from plywood I had laying around. I'm no carpenter but it came out not bad. If I'm hauling anything over 6' long I have to drop the tail gate though. I made the dividers the height of a gallon of antifreeze and my cooler which happen to be the same height and left enough room to hold my gun case on top.

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Yeah, the steel saddle boxes with rounded edges are the right style. I used to paint them to match, or put same white as on truck if it was 2-tone. The ones with the paddle handles are the best, usually made by the truck body companies, like Reading, Koenig, Knapheide, etc.
I needed something back a truck or two and went with the smallest, cheapest, simplest designed aluminum diamond plate from TSC. My intentions were to drill out the rivets, blast, and powder coat white, but now it's dulled enough to look ok. A guy "could have" easily built a box ike this back in the day

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Realized I never updated this thread with what I ended up using. Purchased a DeeZee white smooth steel box and it works great. I can see where you could spend twice as much and get a nicer product from Knaack or Weather Guard, but for my purposes I've been happy with this $350 box. Looks good too! The white smooth steel is definitely the look for a two-tone truck, in my opinion.
Maybe this thread addition will help someone in the future...

Re: Photos of toolboxes?
Eh? Wouldn't the "original look" be sans toolbox altogether? If you mean old-school rounded box, that would be sweet, but I live in the middle of nowhere. Those boxes aren't exactly common. I just wanted something that was functional and looked nice with the truck.
