another shock question for a gmc short bed
Hello forum. I have a 1966 gmc short bed. It has the Dana 44/354 rear end. It has 11 inch drums all round with the wide drums in rear (not like C10's). It has 8 leafs per side.
Question: as I begin to look into new shocks, I don't know whether to order for a light of heavy half. I was recommended to get Monroe Sensa Trac but the mail order folks show those listed for 1500 series (3/4 ton). Do I have a 3/4 ton? I was about to order KYB Excel - G for front and those are listed under light duty trucks. Whatever type i get for front I will eventually get same brand and category for rear. FYI: I am looking for a shock that dampens well but does not stiffen the ride. Thanks for feedback. Last edited by old cool; 05-01-2016 at 05:04 PM. Reason: clarifying purpose |

Re: another shock question for a gmc short bed
If it's a 6 lug you have a 1000 aka 1/2 ton.
If it's an 8 lug you have a 1500 or 2500 aka 3/4 ton. I got the KYB's for the front end of my 1500 and Love them. Got mine from O'riely auto.

Re: another shock question for a gmc short bed
Thanks TJ. From other posts I've read, it sounds like KYB is the way to go. Just for clarification are we talking about the Excel G? Part number 34406 8 . by the way I'm glad you provided information on how to determine a light-duty from a three-quarter ton

Re: another shock question for a gmc short bed
Your welcome! Yep, 344068 front shocks. I'll say for a 915 pound V6 up front they do a darn fine job. haha If your Really concerned about ride though you'll probably want to go with the $70 something pair. They would be stiffer. Unless you have a SBC or 6 banger in there.

Re: another shock question for a gmc short bed
Yours half or 3/4? Judging by the gear ratio you provided I'm leaning towards half ton.

Re: another shock question for a gmc short bed
Im wondering if a person could order heavy parts on a light duty (1/2 ton) back in 1966. Like 8 leaf springs. Based on your first response I assumed 1/2 ton since you mentioned six lug was the way to determine what you have. Either way, I am not seeking a stiffer ride.so I ill prob go with matching Excel' s on rear

Re: another shock question for a gmc short bed
Sure! They are actually the same for half and 3/4 and probably the one tons. The pricing may be different cause I typed in my zip code. lol
