Help just found these in the rear end..

What the hell is this?? They were under the pinion down in the pocket. My pinion was making noise so I pulled it apart to rebuild it and the pinion was loose up and down. Went to set the pinion depth and it was 1/2 inch loose in and out just like it was when I pulled it apart and thats when I found these shims of some sort. Two of them are a little crunched.. Anyone know what they are or maybe my 12 bolt is some early one off?? It is a 65

Re: Help just found these in the rear end..

They look like clutch tabs from a posi that broke off. They would have been holding the friction plates in place with the carrier.

That cage would be for the Dana/Spicer posi unit, not the Eaton style posi. Does your 12 bolt currently have a posi carrier in it?

Re: Help just found these in the rear end..

The ears on those plates, keep the clutch discs and plates from beating up the inside of the carrier. Plus they now have a little more room to move around.

They sure aren't horseshoes. Any damage to crown and pinion?

No damage to pinion, however the inside bearing on pinion pulled off without any resistance. So maybe it overheated. Pulling the cage apart today or tomorrow..
