1987 Grey GMC
Well just like many other people on here, I've been on here for awhile learnt lots and talked to a few people. I've decided the time has come to make a build thread of my own. I've owned my 1987 GMC r10 for a few years now, and done what i think is allot. Change the interior a few times, been through a couple engine changes, and changed paint colour. The list of things i want to change is getting smaller and smaller to where i want the truck to be in my head. I have lots of pictures to add, but i have to be honest I'm not the greatest at remembering to take picture once i start a project, I'm getting better but slowly.
These pictures are when i looked at it the first time. Shortly after looking at it a bought it.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
After driving the truck around as it was for a while i started on body work because my future plans for the truck were to paint it some day. I started by welding in the holes on the fenders where the emblems normally go. Shaved the third brake light and filled the cab seem on the roof. Shaved the stake pocket holes on top on the box.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
Thank you. Would that be because it's very similar to what I'm assuming is your truck in your picture?

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
There has been a few small changes from how it was originally but i really did like the way i got it. And how yours looks RUN GMC.
Another future plan i had for the truck was to some day do an LS swap. So with that i wanted to use one fuel tank at the rear of the truck. I purchased a No Limit Engineering tank and mounted it. No longer having use for the fuel doors on either side of the truck they were shaved and blended in with the rest of the box. In the pictures you can also see where my exhaust will exit. Using stainless tips i picked up and StylinTrucks.com.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
After installing the No Limit fuel tank, i had to mark and make a hole in the bed floor for the filler spout. I choice to make a larger square hole and then locate the filler spout, using a piece of sheet metal with a hole cut in it. I could position the hole in the correct spot. After the filler spot was welded in the box was lined in i believe Raptor box liner.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
I also shaved the tail gate but i don't have pictures of doing it. The way i did it though was i put a whole new shaved skin on it. That i bought off the internet. I cut the outside of the tail gate off, only leaving about a 1/2in around the perimeter to use to weld the skin on. After welding all the way around, the welds were ground down and body worked.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
Another body modification i did was i decided to shave the chrome moulding on the back of the cab. After removing the moulding there is clips held on by small metal studs. They were ground down and dents and low spots were pulled out then body worked and primed.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
Thank you, I've watched your build for awhile now. My blazer is the next project i plan to do. The plans for it involve modifying the frame. Watching your build has helped me with some techniques.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
I've only been browsing this site regularly for a couple months and this is probably the 4th or 5th time I've come across a picture where I notice a Saskatchewan license plate. Always neat to see!

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
Good eye. I've talked to a few people in Saskatoon with good looking squarebody trucks, through this forum.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
With everything else i have been doing to the truck, there was also the normal rust spots that needed fixing. like cab corners, behind the wheel well on the box, and above the wheel well also on the box. Unfortunately i only have pictures of the cab corners being changed.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
Looking good. What are you doing to the blazer? I had a 86 Jimmy years ago. I wish I never sold it.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
My plans with my Blazer, will probably turn into a long build. But what i want to do is build a frame for it. I'm looking at a 2004 Silverado, its missing the engine and trans. But has the rear diff and all front suspension components. I want to cut the frame down and make it fit the Blazer. That way the blazer could be lowered but still be 4x4 because of the independent front suspension. Here's a picture of the blazer and my truck.

Here's a couple pictures of when the truck was in primer. Just something different picture wise.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
This is right before the truck was painted. When i was picking a colour i tried to pick something that was similar to the original factory grey but with a bit of a twist. I ended up looking at a 2010 Nissan GTR colour. The paint code is KAD which they call a Gun Metallic.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
LT7A, thank you. Id like to be able to say that all this progress has happened in a short period of time, but unfortunately this has taken me quite awhile. Although there has been some big changes with the truck in the last couple months.

Re: 1987 Grey GMC
Well this is what all the build up has been about. Like i said before the colour is A Nissan GTR colour, Gun Metallic. Something i did not mention was the wheels and brake kit that i put on the truck before paint. I contacted Travis at Pro Performance. Great guy to work with awesome customer service, and i BIG help figuring out the back spacing on the wheels. And answered all emails i sent. I went with the Show Wheel Streeters, with the gun metal centres. 20x10 in the rear and 20x8 in the front. For brakes i ordered the Pro1 Wildwood kit with dual piston callipers at all four corners.
Here are some crappy cell phone pictures of the truck in my garage shortly after being painted. The last two pictures are when it was more assembled.
