question on 61 motor swap
OK so I removed in line 235 putting In 350. I have 87 front crossmember and 72 motor mount stands. I have to drill top holes and add spacer. Question is should the bottom hole line up or do I drill all three. Cant seem to get anything to line up.

Re: question on 61 motor swap
Drill your holes in the spacers first. Bolt the mounts to the block with the stands but don't tighten all the way just yet.
Lower the block down and put a bolt through the bottom hole in the crossmember first. Then, slide the spacer plates on the top of the frame under the mount and lower the motor down all the way. Mark your holes on the frame rails and if you can drill in place then do that but if you can't you'll need to mark the holes for the frame and lift the engine up and out again, drill your two holes then try to line everything up as you lower the motor down. Took me two or three tries...very frustrating.

Re: question on 61 motor swap
Are you staying with a manual trans with the crossmember mounted bellhousing?

OK tried the stuff that was suggested and things still seem to be way off. Anyone else run in to this on a swap?

Re: question on 61 motor swap
I tried a half inch and a inch. Starting to wonder if I have the right stands. Or maybe they are on wrong sides. The top is on angle doe that longer side go to front side or back?

Re: question on 61 motor swap
This crossmember is from an 85, which I think should be the same as your 87 crossmember. I've circled the ones that should be used, either the set in green or the set in red.
If your mounts are like the ones I have you should have 2 holes by on the foot that mounts to the crossmember, one for the regular position and one to mount farther back, depending on which you use will determine what hole on the crossmember you use. Hope this helps! |

Re: question on 61 motor swap
If you could post some pictures of your mounts and the crossmember that would probably help too.

Re: question on 61 motor swap
These are the mounts I have. I still have the original crossmember in place though so I just drilled all new holes.
Waiting on a couple parts still then I'm swapping it all over to the 85 crossmember and suspension/steering stuff. |

Re: question on 61 motor swap
If they are for the 230/250 I6, those are intended to bolt in, in the rear set of holes. If you have the brackets for a small block, those are intended to bolt in, in the forward set of holes. However since you are working with a '61 frame, those are shorter in height. So the '67-'72 small block engine mount frame brackets fit nicely in the rear holes of the crossmember and no spacer to maybe 1/4" spacer on top of the frame.

Re: question on 61 motor swap
OK so they look like the ones in picture got from a member here. Said they came out of a 72 c20 but they are shorter than the ones in picture and the top is on a angle not straight like the picture. With the top sitting on frame there is about half inch or so short of the bottom reaching the whole.

Re: question on 61 motor swap
If I move one over enough to get a bolt in the other side is of so much the engine is not centered.

Re: question on 61 motor swap
Obviously you are going to have to center the engine between the rails. I'd mark and drill the lower holes first and then you are going to have to deal with the bolt holes on the top of the rails last.
How all of that ends up and whether you need spacers will be determined then... If you go to Post #4 on the following link, you can see my '61 using those mounts on an original cross member. I had to use the spacers... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...hlight=par4tom Tom

Re: question on 61 motor swap
If you are using the '72 small block brackets instead of the I6 brackets you should need no spacer or very little of a spacer. My rough measurements show no spacer needed. However I can not say for certain if the hole in the later model crossmember will be in the correct location or not. My mockup was with an original '60-'62 crossmember.

Re: question on 61 motor swap
are both of these perches of the same length. they didn't come out of a 72 that had a 292 I6 in it . passenger side perch would be shorter. this would give you trouble mounting a sbc

Re: question on 61 motor swap
They were sold to me as small block mounts and they do appear to be the same length. Got tired of messing with lining up lower holes. So I measured and measured centered everything and drilled new holes looks like its all going to work out. Thanks for all the suggestions and help could not do this without the support of this group.
