Air Shocks For a 61
I want to get some air shocks for my 61 Panel. I will only use them occasionally for load capacity.
I found Monroe part number MA757 that is the right length, and has the right bolt diameters from what I can see, but the upper and lower mounts are about 1.4 too wide. Is there a part number that will work? The truck is lowered a but, but not so much that a stock length shock won't work. Thanks!

The Truck-shop shows the same rear shocks from 60-72. Is that correct?
If so, I can use the Monroe Max-Air - Part # MA727. But that shows Extended Length: 20-3/8", Compressed Length: 12-3/4". Seems like the stock shocks are longer than that... Rockauto shows stock rear shocks are 25.5" open and about 15" closed...

Ok guys. I thought I would let you know what I ended up getting in case anyone else is interested in this.
Monroe MA743. They are for 73 to 86 Chevy Trucks. I had cut down the mounting sleeves and bushings because they were about 1/4 inch too wide, and I had to make a steel sleeve to put thru the bushings because the hole was too big. But all in all it took about 30 mins, and they seem to fit great!

Have you loaded that truck up yet? I'm looking at doing the same thing to my '62 - when I hook on to a 16 foot trailer with my Allis CA on it, the rear bumper is really low.
Just wondering how much load those Monroes will handle. |

Keep in mind; air shocks put the load on the shock brackets. Not the way they were intended.
Personally, I'd skip the air shocks, and just replace the trailing arm springs with air bags.

I agree with Lostmy65. While these shocks do help carrying a load, if your towing, I would do bags.
Thats being said, I have loaded the truck up pretty good, and the air shocks do help, but not at all like bags.

I thought I would report back on my air shocks.
I had the biggest load I've had in a while. Roughly 600 pounds of concrete, all of it sitting behind the rear axle. With 100 psi in the air shocks, I was about 1" off the bumpstops. This is with 3" truck lowering springs, which brought the panel down about 5". I took it easy getting home, but it wasn't bad really...

Nice.
I agree about heavy loads and air bags being much better. I also use air shocks on another vehicle (my C10 has bags) just to keep same ride height with small loads since I am lowered a bit and don't want to sit on the bump stops. I doubt I ever go more than 500 lbs and the air shocks do a great job for light duty stuff. Run min pressure at 25-30 psi with no load and around 100-120 psi with 500 lbs. |
