1971 Chevy oil pan help

My oil pan gasket needs replacing. I cannot get the pan out. Do I need to raise the engine or loosen the tranny to separate? At a loss the cross member isn't low enough and the rear of the pan hits the flywheel.

well if you have a 4wd the engine needs to come out.. Word of advise, if you are using the one piece gasket, check with felpro and get the correct PN for your pan. There are 2 gasket thicknesses for around the timing cover.. Lessen learned

You have to jack the motor up enough to clear it. If it's a real 71 pan then the timing cover will need to be taken off to get the lip of the pan out from behind it.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

By the suffix code located on the machined surface in front of the passenger side cylinder head. There will be a series of alpha-numerics stamped on that machined pad. Post them up.

Re: 1971 Chevy oil pan help

I did this job on my 70 a couple of months ago. What a pain! I had to take the front of the engine apart (water pump, harmonic balancer, timing chain cover etc) and then put a 2x4 between the frame and the motor mounts to raise the engine enough to get the pan out. I used the Felpro 1 piece gasket and rtv at the edges per the felpro instructions. I will say it fixed my oil leak. Nice and dry underneath now.

It might have been quicker and easier to just pull the engine, I just don't have the room to do it.
