Need Name or Part Number
I'm trying to keep my truck as original as possible including the emissions stuff. My truck is a 72 with 35/350 and factory A/C. On the passenger side there is a hose that goes form the Air Cleaner to the valve cover and I want to replace the "thing" that goes in to the valve cover. I know it has arcs in it but can't sem to find a listing for it and do not know the proper name of it. I would like to replace it, does anyone know where to buy one or have name and/or part number for it?

Re: Need Name or Part Number
If my memory serves me correctly it's called a spark arrester.

Re: Need Name or Part Number
whats in the valve cover on the other side generally there is a grommet and then the PCV valve in the cover while yours appears to simple be jammed into the valve cover...
I have never seen or heard of a flame arrestor on a vehicle except for a race vehicles air cleaner being made of flame resistant materials but could be wrong here Here is an image of a simple PCV Valve OEM numbers could be as follows 25040145, 25040148, 25043355 ![]()

Re: Need Name or Part Number
As stated above, it's a flame arrestor. It is not considered to be a normal service replacement item. Why do you feel you need to replace it? My 1969 service manual recommends this:
"Remove the flame arrestor and wash in solvent, then dry with compressed air." I believe as long as it permits the free flow of air, all is well. |

Thanks, and that is why I probably cant find one. I didn't realize they lasted the life of the vehicle. I just thought it'd plug up over 40 years and thought its time to replace. I guess i should get a Service Manual for the truck.

Re: Need Name or Part Number
I'm still running my original (119,000+ miles) as long as I can blow through it without restriction, I'm happy. I've never cleaned it that I can recall.

Re: Need Name or Part Number
So, does the flame arrestor have a one way valve inside to prevent possible backfire flame from entering inside the valve cover?

Re: Need Name or Part Number
No. It's free flowing both directions. It appears to have metal "louvers" (probably a series of them) which apparently block a backfire from entering the valve cover. It's visible from the valve cover end. I've never looked at one from the carb end. Some other Chevys (Corvettes, etc.) used a screen-like dome filled with a metal mesh which I believe was inside the air cleaner.

Re: Need Name or Part Number
So my spark arrester was hardly letting any air through - it was serious caked with old oil. I have it about 90~95% opened up now I wasn't able to get it off the hose and I ended up cracking it (at the 90 degree bend).
Anyone got a lead on the hoses?

Re: Need Name or Part Number
Grumpy old man gave a link to a marine engine supply here in this post:
https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...05#post8858005 There is also discussion on that thread and some other threads about using heater hoses but I'm not sure I would take that approach because it would not be fuel and oil resistant material (EPDM rubber that Gates part #28475 is made of is not fuel and oil resistant). |
