69 CST10 fuel pump to carb problem

69 with 350 and auto trans. The engine is 350 supposedly out of 75 Camaro.
600cfm(1406) Edelbrock carb and intake, new fuel pump.

Problem Cranks right up cold but takes the battery way down to crank when hot say 10 minutes later. Put a clear fuel filter on to check what was happening. When the engine is turned off gas keeps flowing in until filter is full. Clamped off the rubber line immediately after shut off and
release it after 10 minutes and it starts right up. Was doing this with the old pump also. Took the truck to a repair shop and it baffles them too.

Any ideas. I am about ready to install an electric with an on off switch like I used to run when I had mirror finish cylinders and double moly rings 40 years ago.

Re: 69 CST10 fuel pump to carb problem

From what I am gathering, you are having hot start issues. Does it take an extended crank for it to fire up?

I ran a 1406 on mine after I dropped my motor in. It would fire up cold no problem. But as soon as it was hot, and shut it down for 5 mins to 10 minutes, it would crank for a extend period of time before it would fire. From research across multiple forums, I have gathered that it's a heat transfer issue causing the fuel in the carb to boil. People have put a non metal 3/4" spacer in between the carb and intake and wrapped the fuel lines to correct the issue. I personally switched out to a Edelbrock 650, and never had the issue since. From all my research, it's a problem a lot of people have encountered with the 1406.

Thanks for responding. If I turn it off and restart in 20 to 30 seconds it fires right up.

You need a heat insulator and a fuel regulator.
Eddy carbs don't like more than 5 psi.

Re: 69 CST10 fuel pump to carb problem

Same thing for me. I could start it back up immediately with no issues. So, I believe you are experiencing the heat transfer issue. Good luck getting it sorted out. I choose to throw a new part at the truck, instead of trying to sort out the issue like others. But for me, the 1406 was free and temporary, I always had the plan to run a 1806. This issue just moved me a long a bit quicker.

I had exactly the same problem with the same carb. A wood spacer and a 3 psi regulator fixed it. Just like the guys on here said it would.

Re: 69 CST10 fuel pump to carb problem

I had this problem with the same carb on a 71 Bronco. What I noticed was after I shut it off the carb was still dumping gas in the engine causing it to flood and stink up the garage. I just replaced the carb when I put a 351 in it but I bet a regulator would have fixed it.

Re: 69 CST10 fuel pump to carb problem

Installed Mr Gasket fuel pressure regulator - set at 3.5 and so far runs great and does not fill up the transparent filter. Will now change oil, switch to metal filter and steel lines.

Thanks for the input. Bill

I have the same issues on my Carter AFB carbed 355. I have a spacer on order and am planning to get a regulator soon as well. Any pics or advice on how you mounted the regulator? Thanks.

Here is how I mounted mine. Fabbed a bracket from a flat piece of 1/8" plate.

You can see the available options on Edelbrock's website. Amazon has them and most major parts stores (AutoZone, Oreilly's, etc) can get them. I'm getting the 1/2" thick one to try, Edelbrock model 8723 since my Dad can get it at AutoZone for me (he's semi-retired and works there part time to stay busy).

Sorry to hear you are having trouble sourcing one locally. Good luck!

What PSI did you settle on running? I'm looking at a Holley regulator so I can use the 2nd output right to a fuel pressure gauge and the options are 1-4PSI or 4.5 to 9PSI.

Bought a Mr Gasket 1to5psi regulator and set it to 3 1/2. It does not fill up the filter now and seem to start right up after sitting for 5 to 10 minutes. I waiting on a wooden spacer from Jegs. also cut up and old windshield sun screen and wrapped the fuel line. If all of this don't work it will be on Craig's list.

That clear plastic filter should only be used to diagnose a problem, also. Seen some dandy engine fires from them also...

Thumbs up Re: 69 CST10 fuel pump to carb problem

I was experiencing this same problem of hard starts when hot.

I was told that the ethanol in our gas creates this boiling gas issue.

I also have an Eldebrock intake and carb combo on my 350 V8.

I ordered a 1" intake/carb phenolic spacer from Jegs
Part #
(555-15491 SPACR PHEN 4150 4-HOLE 1")

Very happy with the results.

Back to responsive turn key starts now.

As previously stated the clear filter was for trouble shooting only. Now have metal filter between gas tank and fuel pump.
