72 blazer console question
Just full of questions today, somebody stop me. I bought a console from a guy about a year ago. it was out of a gmc jimmy 69-72 not sure which one of these years it was. Anyhow it has cup holders instead of a place to put the seatbelts. is this aftermarket?or was the jimmy console different from the blazer? other then the cup holders it looks exactly the same as the original blazer console.

Cup holders are a '73 and up design.

The seatbelt holder ones are supposedly stock for the 69-72 blazer, but the cupholder ones are ALOT more useful in my opinion. I have also heard from others that the cupholder one wasn't just 73 and up?? I have a 70 blazer with the seatbelt holder one...I am a little confused on this issue too.

My console came out of a 75 or newer blazer and it is the seatbelt holder type as well. Guess there were some spare parts at the factory! Jeff.

I HAVE THE CUPHOLDER MODELS IN ALL MY TRUCKS. I LIKE THEM A WHOLE LOT BETTER, AS I'M LIKELY TO HAVE A DRINK WITH ME ALL THE TIME OUT HERE IN THE DESERT. I'M NOT TO AWFUL WORRIED ABOUT ORIGINALITY.

I think the seatbelt style ran through about 75 or 76.

New question
I know everyone calls the rectangular slot holders - seatbelt holders and then they went to cup holders. My theory right or wrong is that the rectangular version was for packs of cigerettes to go with ash tray and often used for setbelt buckles to kept them out of the way. Anyone have literature to support seatbelt buckle holders? I have never been a smoker but that seems like a home for cigs. similar to consoles of today and dash slots for them.

77 went to the much more useful cup and cig. box holder.
I think the next year they went ot the high back seats. does anyone know if the 73-77 seat are identicle to the 69-72 seats but with different covers and trim. That would be nice if they were. The 73 74 75 really look like they are the same in the brochures. Last edited by sameyrasmea72; 09-30-2003 at 12:48 AM. |

Wouldn't it have been nice if the masterminds at GM had thought of these little plastic sb holders a few years earlier, it would of been nice to have tje cupholders in our trucks originally.

console change
From what I know GM changed the design on the console after they changed the seat belt style to the ridged held in position type with the smaller male & female ends, witch ment no need to have a spot on the console to hold the female ends.
Also if you had shoulder belts they bolted two plastic male ends to the front of the console to hold the two female ends of the shoulder belts. Theres a photo of this in the Assembly Manual. |

BINGO!!
Ditto on what burb71 said. After the change to "fixed position" belts in '77 the consoles had cupholders instead. So these consoles actually run from '69 to '76. If you prefer the original SB holder style, the tops are interchangable. Lids and bases are the same. Just find someone with a busted "parts"console to swap tops with! BTW, there are two styles of hinges for the lid. Either style will work, but the 2ND style (later) is better for trucks that see daily use, as it is less apt to crack the rear of the console out. Astrays are a dime a dozen, as they were used in "Burb and Blazer rear seat armrests clear up into the late '80's. Mike

console
You could order either one of those in 1972. But no one knew about the cupholder console.

NEW QUESTION???
Would the seats inthe blue pic above work, I mean I know they WOULD WORK, but if you put 72 covers on them, would they be the same seats as the 69-72 seats? 77went to high backs but these look the same.

I think you are right, the '69-'72 style bucket carried over into '73-'74, (pic#1) and except for different color choices and fabric selection, the actual upholstery pattern, buns, and frame stayed the same. Seat tracks changed, of course, in '73. In '75-'76 the frame stayed the same, I believe, but the buns (foam) changed to accomodate the re-designed upholstery pattern. (pic#2) Mike BTW, the lower (bottom) seat frame looks to be the same, even after the change over to high backs in '77. (swap the backs!) If you have some '69-'74 buckets that have sat with water in the cushions, and rotted the lower frame perimeter, you might even try looking at G-series van lower frames of the same era.
