Engine gets hung up

Ok so while I have been doing body work and the engine has sat, for about a year. I re-wired it and when I finally startered it sounded like something bouncing around under the valve cover so I took look and everything seemed ok, with the covers off I tried and rotate the engine by hand. It goes to a point then seems to get hung up and will not move. I can rotate back and then go toward and it goes a little and does the same thing again. And suggestions? ? I have starated to break her down just seeing if you all had any ideas what the issue is?

Re: Engine gets hung up

Sounds like it may have a valve stuck.

Sticky valve is a good possibility....any bent push rods?

Re: Engine gets hung up

I,m not so sure it's a valve problem in a stock engine but I would definitely start by removing the valve covers and carefully checking the rocker arm movement to see if you can determine at which point the engine gets hung up. See if it's at the same spot every time. You may be able to determine if it's a particular piston.

Definitely don't try to start it until you find out what is causing it though. I've had a rod bearing come loose on one engine and cause major damage. Also had a valve seat come loose in another making an awful racket.

Re: Engine gets hung up

Bent push rod was the issue. Not sure if there is any other damage yet. Hopefully worse case, wiped my cam.

Re: Engine gets hung up

Next question is, why is that valve hung up?

Best case scenario...if you didn't run it very long, might just need to replace the lifter and pushrod, after fixing the valve.

Re: Engine gets hung up

Great! The first two responses hit it on the nail. Hopefully it's just a stuck valve and not more. The way you described the problem where the engine wouldn't move is the reason I suspected something else.

If it's a stuck valve, I once had one a F@rd truck engine that bent a push rod. Engine still ran but really rough and noisy. I used transmission fluid to unstick it. I poured some fluid on the stem and continuously tapped the spring until it broke free.

Good luck.

Re: Engine gets hung up

I am definitely getting a valve job locally. If nothing is wrong in the bottom end just going to put a little beefer cam, push rods and lifters. What yawl thoughts on that approach?

Re: Engine gets hung up

And did not run it long at all. Like minutes because of the noise it was making. Actually the truck never even went in gear once I heard the noise

Re: Engine gets hung up

Well if you are doing a cam anyways, just have them check the cam and bad lifter. As long as you didn't wipe a lobe and spread metal all through the engine, you should be OK.

I figured since I amin there I would beef up the cam and put some roller lifters in there. It's not to much money and heCo it's already apart.

Re: Engine gets hung up

Is this a recently rebuilt engine? The lifter valley looks pretty clean.

If it's a 40 year old high mileage engine and you have a 3 angle valve job done to the heads it will start sucking oil past the piston rings and will smoke.

It was rebuilt by PO. It just sat for a while when I was doing all the rust repair/body work.

It may not have done any more damage. Just make sure there aren't any others that are stuck or sticky.

On the engine I mentioned above that had the bent push rod, there was no other damage. I drove it for several months before selling it.

Re: Engine gets hung up

Thank you everyone for the advice and respond but, the bottom end was a mess. Scared cylinders, metal everywhere. So I think I am not going to put the money and time into this engine. Looking into a whites performance 383 stroker.
