U-joint intermediate steering shaft

Does anyone make a direct replacement steering shaft for our trucks using u-joints? I have found custom made applications but nothing as a direct fit. I've heard switching from the rag joint to a u-joint is a huge improvement.

You can use one off a jeep - if you search here, it will tell you models and years. Did it to mine. Nice improvement.

I did a search. Maybe just not hard enough. Was it a direct fit or did you have to modify?

If I remember right, Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001 and Borgeson makes a universal fit our trucks. It's a little more $$$.

You will have to grove the upper part of the shaft where the bolt goes through. It's a little different there.

Re: U-joint intermediate steering shaft

Depends on the year - mine didn't need grooving.

Re: U-joint intermediate steering shaft

There might be more tutorials out there, but this is a decent explanation. I don't think it gives the exact year/model of jeep to pull the intermediate shaft from, and I don't know off the top of my head, but I have seen that information here on this website so I know it exists.

Re: U-joint intermediate steering shaft

What's your thoughts about a collapsible vs solid shaft? The Boregson is and the Jeep is but I've seen some that are a solid DD. Would make a difference in a front end crash.

Re: U-joint intermediate steering shaft

I found it somewhere on line, but what I did for mine was take the jeep shaft, and burn out the plastic like suggested. I next welded a strip of metal along one side of the upper shaft. I drilled and tapped 3 holes in the strip. I put set screws into each hole. I tightened them up to take up any play, but not overly tight, and used red loc tite on them. This still should collapse and took care of the play.
