Gauge Cluster Removal

Ok all,

I am trying to remove the gauge cluster in my 62 and I have disconnected all the wiring, the 5 screws holding it in. It seems to be hung up on something, but not sure what. Is there some other screws or clips that hold it in? I did see and remove some cage nut looking items on each side of the dash cluster. I definitely don't want to force it and damage the cluster or the dash. Any help would be appreciated.

Unscrew the speedo cable and it'll fall right out.

Yep....I forgot to mention I had already disconnected that too. I will wrestle with it more today.

There's these funky spring clips around the perimeter that catch the cluster.

Chevrolet Shop Manual used specialty tool J-5742. Basically a flat screwdriver with a flat 90* hook on the end.

I found two of them last night so I will look for more of them today.

My bad, the specialty tool was for Tilt Cab Instrument Panels. Same Panels used by GMC.

So it turned out the upper dash board had the rolled lip bent down enough to snag on the top of the cluster. The clips really didn't come into play. They actually stay in the holes...they are what the 5 cluster screws attach to.

Cluster is out and ready for a refresh...

I was wrong as well....forgetting my GMC's design is much different. lol The GMC uses the same design from 60-66 that chevy used from 60-63 as far as the knobs. The knobs on the bottom of the dash are separate from the cluster. Then in 64-66, chevy moved the knobs to the cluster's frame....and to get that cluster out I had to removed the choke knob, windshield wiper control knob, and head light knob; then I removed the speedo cable and was able to pop it out diagonally. Pain in the rear compared to my GMC. lol But it's done.
