Best brand of windshield?
In talking with other people restoring vehicles recently, it seems like automotive glass has taken a quality nosedive lately. I'm not sure if that's true, but since I'm getting ready to buy a new tinted (no shade) windshield for my C20, I was wondering what experience people here have had recently with new windshields.
Thanks in advance...

Re: Best brand of windshield?
I think the concensus here has been that Pilkington is the best. I think they are the same thickness as OEM, or closest to it.
I cant say from experience, but just from reading other posts here.

Re: Best brand of windshield?
x2 on Pilkington. However, no one makes a tinted windshield without the annoying, overly dark, shading across the top. At least no one that I have found.

Re: Best brand of windshield?
I have them installed in case it gets broken going in. I ask for the restoration quality, which may be Pilkington. Most companies make two thicknesses, what it should be and what the world has come to (stick them any way you can to make more money). The thinner ones aren't worth 2 cents. You are better off with a cloudy scuffed original LOF.

Re: Best brand of windshield?
I just got off the phone with they glass company. He can't get a clear glass (actually light green tint) from any of his suppliers. I mentioned Pilkington. He said that they can not get it. Only can get the sun-shade version. If anyone knows of the correct Pilkington, PPG, or otherwise part number, please let me know. Maybe if I get him that, then he can go back to the dealers and inquire further. I see the clear windows on the various parts websites, but ordering a window requires truck freight and that costs almost as much as the window. I really don't want to order online if I can get it somewhat locally. Any one got any advice???

Re: Best brand of windshield?
If they can't get what you want, go ahead and supply your own. Is it that they aren't set-up with a source for the brand? Not your problem. You want what you want when it comes to a restoration. It's not like we do this because we have to. This truck is very special to you and you should get what you want.

Are you saying that you know a source for the good stuff?

Re: Best brand of windshield?
Wait, wait, wait.
I'm about to replace the glass in my truck because we had the "blue tint across the top" installed at restoration time and (a) it's too dark and I'm too tall, and (b) it's incorrect anyway. It sounds like my options are untinted or the band? I can't have the band, and my truck has the tint option, but isn't it supposed to be a consistent green tint across the hole screen, not any more up top than anywhere else? Is that kind of glass available anywhere from anyone? What should I do?

Re: Best brand of windshield?
I wound up ordering one from Summit. I'm sceptical on how it's going to be. It is sold through OER. Says that it is "OER Authorized". I assume that means that they don't make it, but that it meats their specs. Anyhow, It is the lightly green tinted version. Or it least, that's what it is supposed to be. It's being trucked across the country as we speak. The shipping was ridiculous, but all in all, the final price was not that much more than getting the window from my local glass place. I'll post some updates whenever it arrives and then after I have it installed.

Re: Best brand of windshield?
Brian, please do follow up!
Doesn't Summit offer free shipping, or is it oversized? What'd it run to ship? And do you have a part number?

Re: Best brand of windshield?
They don't offer free for this. I actually decided to order a back glass also. I love Ordering from Summit. I am in Central Michigan and when they have the part in the Ohio store, I get them next day (usually free shipping). Can't beet them for a lot of things honestly. So, shipping cost me about $20 for the back window. That is coming ups today (ordered it yesterday). It was $20 instead of free because it is 'oversized'. The Windshield was about $100 to ship. That is coming truck freight. They have a calculator on their website at the point where you are about to purchase it. It would be cheaper to ship it to a business. I think that was either $80 or $90, but I didn't want to deal with that hastle. I could of swore that it showed as in-stock in OH, but it is actually coming from Nevada. Hopefully it won't take too long and comes in one piece. Looks like they use a UPS LTL truck service. I don't think I've used that yet. UPS man has been to my house a couple hundred times in the past four or five years, but nothing truck freight until now. I'll keep you all posted both with the back window and windshield.

Classic Industries offers the same P/N:
http://www.classicindustries.com/pro...s/ct6772t.html I wonder if these are the thick or thin pieces?

Re: Best brand of windshield?
That description reads "including the tinted band upper section when ordering tinted glass", which is not what I need. I need the overall tint, like the picture.
So do I believe the picture (good) or the description (bad)?

Re: Best brand of windshield?
The back window did come today. Packaged extremely well. I pulled the packing away some and it looks like it has the right tint. Might try to install it this weekend.

Re: Best brand of windshield?
Good catch. I just did a search on the P/N from Summit and ended up there.

Nice. Would it be possible for you to measure the thickness?

Re: Best brand of windshield?
Here is a link to OER's catalog. The glass for our trucks is on page 235.
http://www.oerparts.com/Catalog/OER2016_Cat_Web.pdf They offer the windshield four ways. I ordered part number CT6772T for the windshield and BT67724T for the back window. I ordered these through Summit, not directly through OER. I don't have a calipers, but I can try to measure thickness the best I can with a scale. |

Re: Best brand of windshield?
Shaky,
Great timing for this post because I will soon be purchasing a new tinted windshield for my 70 C-20. Not to hi-jack your post but hoping replies could include where these windshields are made. In the U.S. or Canada or ??? Thanks
