70 GMC 350 V8 Motor mounts

I was doing the front timing cover so I decided to do oil pan gasket too. I figured also put in new motor mounts I got on Rock Auto.

I am having a hard time getting the mounts to line up so I can put center bolt back in on either side.

Any tricks to this or is it a pain?

They can be frustrating. You can loosen the bolts holding the mounts to the engine till you get the bolt in the center & then tighten them up. When I have an engine out I always hog out the holes. It makes it easier to get the bolts in & the thick washer covers it all up.

I took the bolts out of my trans mount then used a short cut down punch to line the holes up in the motor mounts. Then when I replaced the bolts in the trans mount I found them to be a 1/4 inch off. I just used the punch in one hole on the trans mount to line it up so I could start the bolt in the other hole.
This was after spending several hours trying to start the motor mount bolts. Then my cousin who was helping me said when I worked at the dealership back in the day we would always drill the holes out and use washers.

I just went through this headache two weeks ago. I ended up taking the mount perches off the frame and bolting them to the motor mount, then muscling the engine around to get the perch bolted back to the frame. It was easier to do it that way for me, I didn't have to work on my back under the truck, and I could actually see the bolt holes rather than fumbling around blindly and hoping I wasn't cross threading the bolts.

Took about 1 hour unbolted transmission mount so I could move the engine some and then they went in.

What a pain!!!

Now she is all dry new oil pan gasket, timing chain and timing chain cover gasket. I used a double roller chain. It fit.

Also noticed a leaking water pump so that went too.

Then replaced the billet on the transmission where the speedo cable is attached since there was some transmission fluid dripping.

So she should be real dry now.
