1960 GMC 4x4
I've been lurking around this site for a year or two now and thought I might start a build thread. I bought this truck a little over a year ago and didn't really do much on it until about 2 months ago. It's a 1960 GMC K1000 long bed. As far as I can tell it's pretty much all original but has some pretty major rust issues. It was running and driving when I bought it. My plan for now is to cut out and fix the rust and get the truck back on the road. No show paint or major custom modifications. Progress will be pretty slow so don't expect too much. Thanks for looking.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
Here are a few more pictures before I started to tear into it. The last two are after I drove it home. It sat there next to my garage for 6 months before I cleared out space and squeezed it into our tiny single car garage.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
This winter I found a guy on craigslist near me with a early 60's GMC hood for sale that was in pretty decent shape so I scooped it up to replace my rusted out hood.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
Last month I started to tear into front end. I removed the fenders, hood, grill, etc. Also took off the doors in preparation to remove the cab from the frame. The last picture is the garage I'm working in. It's a little tight but better than working outside when its raining.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
Here are some pictures of what I found after the tear down... I knew the floors and rockers were toast but I also found some rot in the upper door jams, roof, and around the windshield.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
A couple weekends ago I got some time to finally pull the cab off the frame. Used the cherry picker method others have used here on the forum. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I put the cab inside the garage and rolled the frame next to the garage outside and covered it up for later.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
After getting a good look at the cab I decided to try and locate a donor cab to either replace this cab with or steal sheet metal from. I found one on craigslist about an hour from my house and my wife and I headed over on the long holiday weekend to take a look. This one had much less rot overall so I took a chance and bought it. We will see how it turns out once I start cleaning it up.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
Here are a few pictures of me hauling it home. Got quite a few odd looks rolling down the road with the cab in the bed of my Toyota. Donor cab is either a 60 or 61 GMC 3/4 ton.

I picked up the cab last night so we are all caught up for now. Again, progress will be slow so don't expect too much.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
Congrats on your truck I really like the 4x4's, and I'd say that garage space is tight.. My garage is the wide open out doors.. It's takes time I've been at it for almost 4 yrs but just work on it when I can off and on not every day... these old trucks really took beatings back when they were made cause they were used as trucks so it's amazing there still around.. Glad to see another one get saved...I'll be subscribed and watching.. Look forward to MANY pixs..as we ALL like pixs...

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
Very nice truck! I really like this style body and have been keeping an eye out for one. My wife keeps saying a small garage is better than no garage. Nice work on getting a nicer shape cab to start with too.

Re: 1960 GMC 4x4
Very nice truck! 4X4's rock! Glad it still has the 305 V6. Those are good motors. Dual exhaust and a 500 cfm holley 2 barrel or a modified magnum intake with a 4 barrel Really wakes these puppies up. Something to consider when you get there. Would also like to invite you to the 6066 GMC Forum. I am member TJ's GMC there.
