700R4 to 4L60E swap with LM&

Hi again you all!

I am about to install the "subject" transmission (4L60E) into my truck. It has a 2002 LM7 5.3 with a few goodies so I want to mate it to the electronic tranny.

So, I am replacing the Stage III BTO 700R4 with about 8500 miles on it with the 4L60E. It has the code 2SDD on the tag and is from Mad Dog Transmissions, GA to handle about 500 HP/TQ and under. engine makes about 405 HP and 399 TQ.

My questions are these:

1) Can I replace the 4L60E transmission tail housing with the 700R4 tail housing and install the gears on the 4L60E output shaft to run the speedometer?

2) Which flywheel do I need? I bought the kit to adapt the 700R4 to the LM7 engine. A flywheel I bought to mate to the LM7 (12563136) is too big in diameter for the bellhousing (Thinking it was for the 4L70/80E bell housing). If you have a PN, that would be great.

3) How much will I need to cut off the existing driveshaft? ~1.5"?

4) Can Use the existing neutral safety switch on the column (I believe so)? As it is now, I can not start it in any gear other than P and N with the existing factory wiring and 700R4.

5) Is there a different trans mount needed? The one I have in there is new for the 700R4.

6) Which connectors will I need for the cooling lines? I have steel lines now. would it be easier to go with SS flex or rubber trans cooling lines?

Thanks in advance for y'alls help. This board is great!

John

Since nobody has answered your questions I'll give it a shot.

Physically, there is no difference in size between the 700R4 (also known as the 4L60) and the 4L60e. Unless you have a Corvette case, the mount should be in the same place.

You don't need the switch on the drivers side of the transmission. Yours probably doesn't come with one anyway.

The cooling line connectors interchange.

I would assume the factory LM7 flywheel for a 4L60e would work.

The 4L60e need the VSS signal to work. I suppose there is an aftermarket pass-thru sensor (Dakota?) that would allow you to use a gear set to work the speedometer yet still send a proper signal to the PCM to shift the transmission.

There is also a thread (in the this forum) about converting your existing speedometer electronic functionality.

We really need to know if your 4L60E is a 300mm or a 298mm, Can you take a pic of the Input Shaft & Bellhousing?

2SDD, Denotes a 2002 S-10 which would be a 298mm 4L60E....But it could have a 300mm Input Drum, Pump & Bellhousing.

300mm versions are about 1.5" longer than a 298mm 700R4/4L60/4L60E.

The mount on Removable Bellhousing 4L60E's are in a different location VS 1-piece case 700R4/4L60/4L60E, But your old mount will bolt up, You just need to move the crossmember a little.

Re: 700R4 to 4L60E swap with LM&

i had a 1995 5.7 & 4l60e in my 66 c10. the trans did not have the removable Bellhousing
I used a tail housing from a 700r for the speedo then i welded up a boss for the speed sensor and added a reluctor ring. Hope that helps

Yea, Also learned that the bellhousing is from a 4.2L Six out of a trailblazer. One thing of note though, I had heard that the post 96? transmissions used a removable bell housing that was deeper to support the new carbon fiber TC.

Having just arrived in Kenya for the next year, the conversion project is on hold for a while. I'll return March or June 2017. Thanks All!
