Broken Alternator Bracket

A friend was looking at my truck and noticed that my alternator bracket was broke. He said he has seen quite of few of our trucks with the bracket broken in the same place. My truck is a 72 350/350 with everything stock. Has anyone else had this happen to their truck?

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

If you leave the long bottom bolt too loose, the vibration will break the top bracket.

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

welding it and it will crack again. they cracked often as did other factory alternator brackets. the solution then and now is to double them up. and keep some spars handy.

from the factory they are painted orange.

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

I agree on doubling them up.
Was told that from the factory that the 283's came that way as they liked to crack.

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

Thanks for all the info and comments. Today I took a pic of the bolt that is holding the bracket to the alternator. The way this bolt is sitting to me it doesn't look like something the factory would do. If someone has an original 350/350 with a/t truck can they check the bolt and see if my assumptions are correct. From the info I have got from this thread I think if its the wrong bolt in there that would explain the cracked bracket.

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

Oh yeah. That's it. I always used a flanged bolt. Much fatter with a sort of built in loc-washer deal. Washers would always seem to come loose so I wouldn't use them.

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

I bet that is the problem and why mine cracked. looking closer I se the bolt is on the outside and the washer between the bracket and alternator. Looks like a simple fix, proper bolt and a new or good used bracket and with my usage it will last the life of the truck.

My plan is within the next 2/3 years to take my truck on the Power Tour. I've been watching some YouTube videos of the Power Tour and I guess with 5000+ classic vehicles driving a lot of miles in extreme heat etc. there are lots of breakdowns. Something like this broken alternator bracket not noticed and looked after properly could cause a breakdown on a long trip like the Power Tour.

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

It's nothing new... they almost ALL crack over time. I haven't had one of these trucks yet that hasn't either came with a cracked bracket, or they crack later on. It's just kind of a poor design with a lot of force being placed on that long skinny bracket.

Re: Broken Alternator Bracket

I have one of those (somewhere) that is doubled up and has a metal thingy that holds them together. I was thinking it was some sort of factory fix of a bad design. If I ever run across it Ill post a picture.
