12 Bolt Rear End

Made a start stripping the 12 bolt rear end I got for my 62. Got the drums off but Im buggered if I can see what holds the half/drive shafts in place.

Can anyone tell me how I get them out?

Re: 12 Bolt Rear End

Axles are held in with C clips located on the inner end of the axle (differential side gears). Pop the cover off of the back of the rear end, remove the cross shaft out of the differential case, then push the axle in toward the center of the differential. They will usually fall right out. Once the C clip is out you can just pull the axle out of the housing.

Thanks for that.

Im used to C clips on the outside. I'll take the cover off tomorrow and do that. I want to take the diff out anyway so thats not a problem.

The manual I have is for the 62 but the axle is from a 76. Didnt think about my missmatched parts when I bought the manual - Doh!

Re: 12 Bolt Rear End

Good thread John. At the moment, however, my goal is only to get the drive shafrs out as Im concerend I have an issue with one is that when I turn it it doesnt turn the diff and likewise when I turn the diff it only turns one shaft.

After that I do want to take the diff out to make the casing a bit liglter so I can clean and paint it. However, when it comes to working on the diff that thread will be invaluable.

Re: 12 Bolt Rear End

There is no issue with what you are seeing. That is how and open carrier works.

A carrier without limited slip. The wheel with the least resistance spins while the other does nothing. Also known as the reason I got stuck in my yard.

Re: 12 Bolt Rear End

An open carrier as not a limited slip or posi. What you are describing is normal operation for an open differential.
