Original jack stowage
I rec'd one of these to reintroduce my truck to original. Can anyone explain or picture how the jack handle and lug wrench were intended to mount to the spring behind the door jam? Storage for the jack on the floor is straight forward.
I know there's a bag involved, though replacements aren't realistic. Doesn't sound like they were built to last. Any ideas for a replacement? I did find a substitute, but I'm not prepared to pay $80 plus for a bag at this point. Thanks.

Re: Original jack stowage
Thanks Jim. I've seen that, but I can't quite visualize how it works. Does the ring on the end of the spring simply pull back, insert bag and done?

Re: Original jack stowage
That's about it. Stick a finger or 2 through the ring, pull the spring back, hold it as you insert the tools, and release the spring. Problem is that the crank is the only tool long enough to actually be held in place unless you have some sort of bag to hold stuff. I don't recall ever having a bag (actually a crappy plastic foam). I used to wrap the short tools in a towel, tied a rope or shoelace around it and placed it in the cab corner. Now I have them strapped to the crank with a 1/2" wide web strap. Incidentally, I am saying tools (plural) since, as you can see from the assembly manual picture above, the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks included a "tire iron" as well as the lug wrench and crank.
Below are pictures of my tools strapped together and stored in the corner as well as a bag I found in the junkyard next to a 69. I'm not 100% sure the bag is correct but assume it probably is. Without the bag the tools also rattle around so I normally have a rag wrapped stuck between the spring and the crank and another in the bottom of the cab corner. Maybe someone has a more innovative solution. Last edited by FirstOwner69; 06-16-2016 at 10:12 AM. |

Re: Original jack stowage
From what I've seen, I agree that's the bag. Clean too. Thanks for the clear description as always Jim. I frequent the second hand stores, don't know what I'm looking for till I see it, but a tall thin leather bag is the ticket.

Re: Original jack stowage
I've been thinking that one of the bags used since at least 2000 in the Silverados might work. Not perfect, but....
I'll have to check out the one in my 2015. |

Re: Original jack stowage
That's the bag I have, received thankfully from another local board member. I've got a set of jack parts in the queue to restore...
