Generator Bearing

so trying to become familiar with this site and searching isn't the best so I figure I would post this up.

1949 Chevy 3/4 ton. Still has the 6volt system. So out of the blue the bearing on the generator started squealing. I would take it in but the last shop in the Omaha area closed up. So anyone swap out the generator bearing themselves?

Its an easy process, The bearings should still be available.

As long as you are in there change the brushes and polish up the commutator too. Find a 50's Motor Manual it has a detailed section on the rebuild. Do not forget to polarize the regulator before running it.

the most common bearing in the front of delco generators is a #203 it is a very popular bearing used in generators, alternators, and small electric motors the dimensions are
17mm ID/ 40mm OD/12mm W.

it will be very dirty inside.
resist the urge to clean it out with gasoline.
go to home depot or auto zone or some place and get solvent. new brushes will arc a little till they seat in.
its possible your field coils are old enough that they are insulated with treated fabric.

Pretty good advice all around.

the brushes can be interesting to get back in place but otherwise it is pretty simple to rebuild one and I would go ahead ahead and replace the brushes and the bushing on the other end while i was at it.

Make sure you support the end frame when you knock the old bushing out with a pipe or large socket that is just larger inside than the OD of the bearing so that you don't crack or break the end frame.

If you are going to use a cleaner on it while you have it apart CRC Lectra Motive would be one of the better choices. You can find it at most any parts house.

On the bearing it's self you may have to take the generator apart and get the number off the bearing or take it to a parts house or bearing house to match it. It shouldn't be expensive though as Chevs of the 40's shows them for about 8 bucks.
