66 Chevy Grill Material

Hey,

I have tried searching and I cant find much but I was wondering if someone could tell me what the material is for a 66 grill is? From what I can find it is anodized aluminium but were they all? Mine is painted in primer and the back side of it looks pretty rusty (surface) making me think that its not and am trying to determine whether its worth the effort to try to strip and polish if its just going to be steel.

Thanks,

Jamie

Re: 66 Chevy Grill Material

The grills were both annodised aluminum and painted steel. It sounds like you have a painted steel grill if there is rust on the back side. Check it with a magnet if you are unsure.

Re: 66 Chevy Grill Material

A standard grill is steel. Bright anodized aluminum was optional as was chrome bumpers, chrome hubcaps, side trim, etc.
If you prefer the look of aluminum, a steel grill painted or powder coated silver
can be convincing.

Thanks Captainfab and oem4me, turns out its the steel one. I will now need to look at getting it either re-chromed or purchase a reproduction one. I was wondering if you are able to get the GMC one as a reproduction? I have looked everywhere on the web and I have come up with nothing.
