86 Silverado K10

I normally hang out in the 60-66 forum but I got a hankering for another square, so I picked this up the other day. 305/700R, NP208(I assume). So far I've removed all the old man accessories except the headliner, bought a Harbor Freight vacuum pump and replaced the a/c compressor, dryer, orifice tube and got it blowing 40 degree air on a 90 degree day, changed the oil, started to chase down a possible vacuum leak or other cause for rough idling. I took the air cleaner off, looked at the M4MED and the Borg collective of vacuum hoses and tubes, and put it back on and got a wood block for the accelerator pedal.
I will dive into in the near future, but for now with the a/c on, it energizes the throttle kicker and knocks it up to fast idle. Further down the list are service the trans, then on to rust repair and paint. I'm sure I will be back shortly with some questions once I dive in to the rough idle issue. Here's some pics when she first got home:

Look at what was under that seat cover!

Re: 86 Silverado K10

New compressor, dryer and 134a fittings:

First charged, idling in the shop:

I was a bit disappointed that I was only getting 58 or so degree air, so I decided to run into town and get some real air blowing across the condenser. I live about 2 miles out of town and by the time I got there I was turning the fan down to low:

Its working great now, but I did see some dye around one of the hose attachment points on the fenderwell, so I picked up a new set of hoses. I'll replace them once I see a noticeable drop in pressure.

Re: 86 Silverado K10

I also ordered a set of inner fenders and a FSM set from RockAuto. The manuals are a reprint of a reprint of a reprint...but they are perfectly readable and were only like $20

Nice looking truck. They all need a little work. I like the tw0 tone trucks. What are your plans for it?

I'd like to get the rust fixed, paint it, and drive it.

Re: 86 Silverado K10

I really hate that humongous rear bumper. I also want to put a receiver hitch on for towing so that needed to go. I wanted a sport bumper but they are just too hard to find and too far out of my budget by the time I sourced the brackets also. I ran across an ad on CL last weekend for a 87 bed for sale. The bed turned out to be a bust, but he did have a nice chrome step bumper that I snagged with brackets for $75. Off with the old:

Re: 86 Silverado K10

Advice to anyone that does this: if an impact struggles to break the first bolt loose, go straight to the torch. Man were these stuck. I fought with impacts, cheaters etc for close to 30 minutes and don't know why. About 30 seconds per bolt with the oxy acetylene and the old POS hit the ground. Then on with the new. Tailgate removed for no reason other than I think it looks cool without one.

Re: 86 Silverado K10

And finally, nothing like a set of turbo's and dual exhaust to wake things up:

My exhaust guy said the converter weighed about 100 lbs. Chucking that, the gigantic school bus muffler and going to 2.25" pipe has made a real seat of the pants difference. Probably not a lot, but it's definitely noticeable. And yes, I can see the valve seals are shot.

Re: 86 Silverado K10

Yeah I'm not expecting much from the 305, but anything I can do to help it that doesn't cost a lot, and I'll be able to use if/when I drop in a crate 350, I will try.

Awesome truck!!! Wow that seat looks practically brand new. What does the dash look like under that cover that's on it?

Re: 86 Silverado K10

Unfortunately the dash did not fare as well as the seat. It's got the usual cracks.

Re: 86 Silverado K10

Where did you source those inner fenders from? I need to replace mine and yours appear to have all the correct holes and such.

Re: 86 Silverado K10

Rockauto. I have not fitted them yet, but they look ok. They are the CAPA ones, a bit more expensive but supposed to be better.
