68 Shop Truck Build
Today I picked up a backup 68 swb and now I am ready to proceed! At first glance, the truck I picked up today doesn't look like much but I was surprised at how solid it really is. Most all the body panels fit extremely well as does the doors. There is rust (expected down in the south) but not much considering it appears never to have been cared for ever. By the end of the weekend, I may decide to use this cab over my original since this one seems more solid. First pic is of my original and the other photos are of the truck I got today. By the way, from the title you already know it's going to be a shop truck. I'm 3rd generation owner of my business and we have had many many trucks hand painted through the years.

Well before this second truck popped up, I was just going get the original truck roadworthy again with a 5 speed and some freshened up flat paint. But the 2nd truck has a more solid cab so first, I'll pull it off, repair what little rust damage there is, then see what I have left. If the cab really turns out nice, I may go forward with a little more involved and nicer build. Nothing over the top by any means but nice paint, interior, 5 lugs, front disks, power brakes/steering and of course a peppy little V8.

Been trying to figure out why oh why would someone enlarge the opening for the radio that much. Maybe a 19" color tv?

PO had some plan, he put disk / power brakes, moved the gas tank out back, power steering, was getting this baby right now.

Bought this two owner 72 that I'm having picked up as I write. She has some rust issues being she was driven on salted roads for ten years but with only 57 original miles, the driveline is pretty solid. All adult owned and driven which is a blessing. 307 V8, 3 ott, 3:73 rear gear. I'll know a lot more when I have had time to look her over good in the next few hours.
I should have more than enough parts now to build a pretty respectable shop truck plus one. |

I've had time to look the 72 over well now and have decided to invest time and money into getting her up on her feet and running first. Going to change out all fluids and replace the starter. I've also ordered 4 - 15 x 8 steelies that should arrive later this morning. Tires will be next, then hopefully by Friday we will see how hard this baby is to start. PO said he moved it around the yard to mow till the front right wouldn't hold air anymore. Battery was replaced April 2014 and still has some spunk.....saw it smoking the starter the day when I purchased it. After looking at my other two 68's, I'm kinda excited about getting started with something I can actually tinker with and put on the road in less than 2 years.

Wheels arrived this morning from Summit. Series 62 Wheel Vintiques. Going to lay some paint on them tonight and have the 265/70R15's installed tomorrow. |

Decided to only paint and mount tires on two. I want to be sure they fit front and back w/o any interference and secondly, if I'm going to need to go to a deeper red. I'll be out of town on business tomorrow so it will be Friday before I know. Hate missing a day of progress but 10 hours of driving tomorrow will give me plenty of time to scheme!
