disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

I have a 1985 C-10 complete front end that I am going to be swapping into my 1965 C-10 it has the 1-1/4 wide rotors that are five stud. Is there an OEM six stud rotor that will bolt onto the spindle and line up with the caliper so that my front and rear bolt pattern will be the same?

There is no factory GM rotor for this application that is 6 lug. All 2WD trucks from '71-'87 were 5 lug. That said, almost all of the truck vendors sell 6 lug rotors that would be for the disc brake conversions. They are not something you can walk into a parts store and buy, you have to order them from a vendor. My recommendation is Early Classic Enterprise as they use Raybesto rotors.

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

It can be done but you have to use '93-'98 spindles, '73-'87 3/4 ton lower arms, tie rod adapter sleeves and matching ball joints for the spindle. Then you can use either the 5 or 6 lug rotors for '93-'98.

Much simpler to use the aftermarket 6 lug rotors.

They will not work with pre '88 spindles.

I just went out to my shop and dropped the old 88 C2500 6 lug rotors onto a '75 1/2 ton spindle with bearings and spindle nut...it does work...

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

Verdell are the 88 C-2500 rotors the same width and diameter as the 1985 five stud rotors?

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

The 6 lug rotors are "light duty" 3/4 ton application. The rotor thickness is the same as 1/2 ton "heavy duty" 5 lug rotors but I think the overall diameter is slightly different. I used to run the 6 lug rotors on my truck and switched to 5 lug. Everything bolted up with no issues. Hope this helps

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

The 1/2 ton five lugs that I have are 1-1/4 thick and 12" across through the center. Are your 3/4 ton light duty the same specs?

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

Yes they will fit the spindles as the bearings are the same. But did you try and install a caliper and pads? It won't line up.

I've been over this years ago. And using the '88-'98 spindles apparently won't allow enough camber adjustment.

Thanks Captainfab, so it looks like there is no fix using OEM parts. I have been looking for your post on what stock axles fit the diff that are five stud.May be an easier fix.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/clp-cp4r-6 Copy and Paste is nice...

Classic Performance now offers upgraded brake rotors in standard or drilled-and-slotted styles for their disc brake conversions. These are the same high-quality pieces found in Classic's complete brake kits. All components work with their drop spindles or stock 1971-72 and 1973-87 stock spindles. Classic Performance upgraded disc brake conversion rotors are made with premier materials and craftsmanship to ensure a great fit and dependable performance.

Here is a Review.

The right rotor for front disc conversion!!!

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

CLP-CP4R-6

I used 85 chevy truck stock spindles for my disc brake conversion of my 69 gmc truck and wanted to keep the old school wheels! This saved me time and money, they fit like a glove, perfect fit!

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

Thanks Chevy Fleetside, I am also trying to keep my steel (disk brake) wheels with hub caps.I have belltech dropped spindles with the 1985 C-10 front end installed. If they will fit that is the way I will probably go.

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

There aren't any OEM axles that will work in the '63 to early '70 12 bolts and give you the 5 x 5 wheel stud pattern. The '71-'82 12 bolt axles are .750" too long. You will need aftermarket conversion axles or have your axles plugged and redrilled. But before you do that make sure the wheel bearing surface is in excellent condition.

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

Here is what I did to my 66' I found a 1/2 ton 1984 truck moved the hole front over to my truck, then I moved brackets from my truck axle to the 84 axle and installed in back In to my truck. So now I have 5 lug front and back for $100.00. I did install drop spindle, 4" drop springs front and back. New adjustable track bar. The new axle Is a 11/2" wider on the 1984, so It pushed the wheels out a little bit and they fit great. Also I think the new gears are 308 or something close to that not 4.11 it had

Re: disk brake question 5 stud to 6 stud

I did the exactly as Chevy Fleetside said. CPP drop spindles & rotors from Summit (the best price I could find) and the 6 lug rotors work out to be less than $25 per rotor more than the stock 5 lug rotors from Auto Zone. When I bought my truck it already had 15" X 10" rims on it and I didn't want to buy all new rims. I'm also extremely CHEAP and even used ALL the 73 brake lines & proportioning valve from the 73 Donor Truck but I did have to fab up a bracket to mount the proportioning valve in the correct location. The brake lines & proportioning valve all look factory because they are.
