Who daily drives their old truck?
So who does this and how far a drive for you?
I bought my 68 with the intention of DDing it, but AFTER I put discs on it (kit is still sitting in boxes), shoulder belts (purchased but came in bad shape, hopefully vendor solves this quickly), quieting down the exhaust (just got a pair of Vibrant resonators last week to add to my 2-chamber flowmaster exhaust - still in boxes) and getting it running better because I couldn't give it more than 1/3 throttle without it breaking up (new carb and fuel pump installed, much better, still needs some tuning). Anyway, despite not having time to work on my house AND this truck (house is priority, especially in wife's eyes) my hand was forced last week when the transmission went on my 2000 Silverado on the way home from work one night. So I gave my fluids and air pressure a check, gave her a quick rinse and now she's doing 70 miles a day on some very fast and congested tri-state roads. So far so good mostly, have a noise popping up here and there from what sounds like right left front wheel. Assuming it's a brake issue. I bought a blutooth speaker to pair to my phone in order to listen to Sirius until I get a radio installed. Having said all of that, it sure is nice to see and climb in her in the morning and at night. What do you all think!? What's your story/excuse? And let's see what you've got.

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
I don't yet as it is a frame sitting in my building but as soon as its ready for the road I will drive it quite frequently. That is why I am builing it.

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
Count me in on the D.drivers!....but wait, I often home office...lol so I really don't travel or commute as much as most people.
That said, I do travel to Vancouver quite a bit and when I do I take my 2005 GM truck which gets better mileage and is generally better for the crap traffic lifestyle I encounter there....lol (Vancouver is a traffic mess given the amount of bridges, people, drivers, traffic, etc.....really poor vehicle environment) I wouldn't want to waste my '72 on those A to B overnight 'all business' trips.... BUT, when I'm in town here....its all '72 for me. All good Coley

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
I don't drive it to and from work but I do drive it pretty much every day in some form. Mostly just runs to store or buddies places.

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
I guess you're not worried about a scratch or two!
I hope that that isn't you spray painting 6-6-6 mark of the beast stuff all over your neighborhood bridges.

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
I don't yet but I plan to. My truck isn't for show, it will be for hauling.
I've been swamped with getting my ski condo rented out but that's just about handled now. I'm hoping to get back onto my truck this week actually. I would love to have a panel or 'burb! That would be "covered, lwb hauling" for me. |

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
30 mile daily commute in SF Bay traffic.
Not the most comfortable (3/4 ton 4in lift 36in tires) or the quietest (doors rattle, need new felts) or the most fuel efficient (8-10mpg), but the 1/4in steel plate bumpers really give the other drivers pause before they cut in front of me.

Nah .. it's a truck. Bought it for this kind of thing. "I hope that that isn't you spray painting 6-6-6 mark of the beast stuff all over your neighborhood bridges." Not me. Bridge is in a state park and has been a popular hang out for kids going wayyy back. You should see all the crazy graffiti underneath. Spot is bad for trash dumping too. Since it is on my way to the dump, I have on occasion picked up some there and hauled it along with my own. One time I noticed something orange in the water 40-ft below the bridge. Walked down to find a complete SBC engine someone had rolled over the side. Was leaving an oil slick downstream. Called the county and they hauled it out of there.

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
I drive mine every day. Of course it's only 5 miles and life Is a hell of a lot slower here than NY.
I'm retired, but I go to the shop everyday to work on my projects. I have slowly worked most of the bugs out of mine. I drove it to Wichita, KS the other day pulling a 14,000# GVW trailer. The cold air conditioning has been nice the last few days.

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
Is the plan for mine, LS swap and AC. I hope to replace my 2014 crew cab with this new 71. Miss the old sheet metal feel and now that I am not racing, I don't need all that crew cab.

I drive one of these two almost every day working on the property I bought in town.... One hauls tools and the other hauls materials. The Panel Truck has a LS1/4l60e and the Dually has a 350 crate/NV4500 combo. Great work trucks..... LockDoc

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
I DD mine, well as often as she'll let me. I seem to have very bad luck with TH350's as i am now down my 3rd since i bought it. That being said, I have only put used transmissions in her. I give em a qwik spiff-up with fluids, seals. filter, gaskets, and the vacuum canister thingy, and a new Torque Converter. but never the less, they are used tranny's. this time I'm thinking of going about it a lil bit different. I've stumbled into a 98 5.7 Vortec and a 4L60E from a totaled truck. It has just over a 100,000 miles but it runs great.I had a 98 Silverado with the same drive train only 4X4 and I personally ran it to 286,000 miles. i sold it to a friend and he still uses it to this day, over 340,000 miles n still going. If the deal pulls thru, then my 72 will be getting a more modern power-train,if not, then it will get a fully re manufactured TH350. Either way, she'll still be my DD

Bay area traffic is nuts.
Have you tried adding a cooler yet?

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
Who dumps an engine over a bridge? I always wonder who the dumpers are, and how they justify doing it.
Great trucks guys, keep em coming. Oh, and the 4L60e in my Silverado lasted 300K+ miles. People seem to say they are weak, I tend to disagree.

Re: Who daily drives their old truck?
^^^^^Cool.
I get some looks etc, but for the most part people in the area that I work and commute to don't even notice or care about it. I think that that says something about the area. Ferraris don't even garner much attention, and I see one at least every week or so. People don't really seem to care about anything but themselves. Lockdoc - the land in your pictures looks amazing. One day. One day...
