Help ID K10 Steering Gear - 67 or later?

I have a 67 K10 with power steering, and I want to replace the steering gear. Although my VIN and cab are 67, I am not sure about the rest of the truck.

Someone in another thread mentioned that the 67 K10 did NOT have a dimple in the frame near the steering gear.

Can someone help me ID the steering gear/frame from the picture below? If it is not a 67 gear all the better, as I do not see anyone listing refurbished units for that year. Plenty available for 68-72 though.

Thanks for the help.
-Steve

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but your frame looks to be a 69 or newer. The radiator mounting bracket / spring mount are different on the 67-68 frames. If you look on top of the frame rail near the steering box there should be a number stamped into the frame. This is the vin # and if original to the truck it would match or partially match the vin of the body.

This might help you determine what year your frame is, I also put a link to it if you can't read it.

67 4x4 didn't have that style steering gear. It had ram assist. That doesn't look like a 67 frame to me. I've been wrong in the past tho.

Thanks Gary, I didn't know about the numbers on the frame. I can't read the LMC decode info on this laptop (even with glasses), but with the number and a little poking around in the forum I discovered that it is a 1970 frame.

It has an open knuckle front axle with drum brakes, which makes sense now. This is a huge help when servicing the chassis items.

VIN/cab is 67, chassis is 70, 327 is 66. All my wife can think of is the Johnny Cash classic, "One Piece at a Time"

With the replies so far I dug some more and from referencing the online Chassis Service Manuals see the difference between the 2 types.

I am glad I have the newer version, and have already ordered a replacement.

For reference, my frame number is 0Z161077. I read that as 1970 made at the Fremont plant.

Hopefully someone with that VIN doesn't want his frame back.

Hey Steve,

Here in NH, as long as none of the part numbers /vin numbers show up as stolen you can get a new vin for an assembled vehicle. It would need to be inspected' and all numbers found recorded by a state trooper or possibly by a reg car dealer. Or if it was already reg or titled all that's needed is a bill of sale for a vehicle that old.

Garry, Lucky for me the previous owner had it registered in NH when I bought it, so I was able to register it the same day I brought it home. I may apply for a title at some point, just to have one for it.

While I wait for the rebuilt steering gear to be delivered, I adjusted the one I have to see if I could take some play out. It helped a little, but I will be glad to get the replacement installed.
