To narrow or not to narrow

As my build is progressing I am constantly thinking about traction.
A supercharged 6.0 with 255/65/16 tires is certainly a recipe for disaster!
Being that the truck is a step side that is all the tire I can fit under it, I certainly don't want to tub the truck out, but I am considering some midifications to the frame and bed to be able to squeeze some more tire under it. I'd like to see some pictures of "mini" tubbed trucks or trucks modified to fit a wider tire!

What do you guys think?

Re: To narrow or not to narrow

I run a Mickey Thompson 29X15.00R15LT on my stepside. Only mod to the frame is the bump stop bracket is cut off.
Tucks right under with the correct differential length and wheel offset.
And it hooks hard.. :-)

Stock frame with a step side. I cut the rear end four inches on each side.

Used stock fleet side bed tub's on the step side.

540 ci motor ,close to 800. Hooks ok with the 16.5 wide MT drag radials.

I have a 62 step side and I can fit a set of 275/60R15's in the rear with a 5 inch drop and no tubs. contagious102 has a 64-66 so he can fit a wider tire because the frame is skinnier in the rear than the 60-62's

Thanks,

I found some really nice wheel tubs, they are on order now! I am thinking I will be able to run a 315 tire with these after the install and removing the bump stops!

Plenty of room for tires here:

Re: To narrow or not to narrow

This is a work in progress:

We left the frame alone, save for removing the bumpstop brackets. I narrowed the stock '65 12-bolt by 7", installed Moser "big Ford" ends, JB5 drums, etc. The wheels shown here have 1" less backspacing than the final wheels (3.5" vs 4.5").

The front of the wheel openings were stretched forward 2", both to provide clearance for a larger diameter tire and to center the tire in the opening.

We formed round stock to the shape of the wheel openings, then cut, rolled, and welded the stock flange to it. That gained another inch of width clearance on each side.

Lastly, the tubs were each widened 5-3/4".
