Re: Dash cracking

Hi Gary, Mine did this also. I don't know what caused it but I drilled a 1/8" hole at the end of the crack and then filled and smoothed over with good old JB WELD. Sanded and touched up with paint. The key to stopping a crack is drilling a small hole. Been over four years and you would never know there was a problem. Good luck Mike.

Re: Dash cracking

Probably some strain was put on the glove box door after all these years. Like mentioned above, his fix should be more than sufficient.

I agree. The term is called "stop drilling". By drilling a hole at the end of the crack it gives the stress a rounded edge to follow that's harder to crack. The hole can be very small. On a crack that size I would say 1/8 maybe 3/16 hole would be perfect

Re: Dash cracking

Mine did that on the right side, from all the years of us kids letting the jump seat slam into it(we didn't know any better)when we got out of the back of the Suburban. I filled it with JB but it cracked again, so will drill the small hole as mentioned above, re-JB it, and go from there.

Re: Dash cracking

The correct way top repair that is to weld it not glue it. Then sand it down, prime and paint to match.

Re: Dash cracking

Nope, he's gluing it. Far too many people think that JB weld is a replacement for welding. It is NOT. It is a bandaid at best. Can you tell I'm not a fan of JB weld? I don't know how many times someone has brought me something that they globbed JB weld on, and it broke again. Then I have to clean all of that 'glue' off, before I can weld it correctly.

Re: Dash cracking

Thanks guys, I guess I knew I was going to have to get it welded just need to figure out how I am going to reinforce it so it doesn't happen again. Welding will sometimes weaken the surrounding area on metal that thin.

I was in the middle of replying about that...before applying heat to that area, double check to see what was causing the stress in the particular area to relieve it. I would be concerned is that it might rear its ugly head again, but in a different spot.
