TH350 removal. Engine rotation

Hi guys,

My TH350 is now removed. The truck is jacked up in the air and I would like to have it down while looking for an other tranny.

The engine is resting on a concrete pile by the oil pan to avoid too much angle during the tranny removal process.

My problem is that I am not able to jack the car higher to remove the concrete pile because if I do so, the engine start to rotate again and is about to break the distributor cap.

So my question is : Do I have to leave the car truck up there waiting to get the new tranny installed or is there a way to stop the engine rotation? Will it even stop if I remove the distributor?

Thanks and sorry for my english

Engine : 350

Where are you jacking it up at that the engine is moving? I'm not understanding the use of the concrete, you should have no issue dropping it down without supporting the engine any.

Re: TH350 removal. Engine rotation

I've dropped the transmission out of my truck three times (#1 install high-stall converter, #2 install SFI flexplate, #3 rebuild transmission), and have never done anything to support the engine beyond its own motor mounts.

Mind you, I have poly mounts. And the exhaust still attached.

Directly from the front ends of the frame. (where the jack is on the picture)

You can also see the pile under the oil pan.

Understand that I was all by myself to remove the tranny. I didnt' want to have a 45 degrees angle and be alone under that.

I don't understand why the engine is moving. It looks like the cross member was supporting part of the engine weight.

Re: TH350 removal. Engine rotation

You could maybe rig up a ratchet strap somehow. Maybe under the pan?

Or could you wedge a board under the pan to the frame rails?

It's moving because the engine only has two mounts and they are not centered. It's back heavy so it's going to tilt down

You are right. Wheels are now touching the ground but I still have to use à floor Jack to hold it.

I Will try what you said

Thanks

I assume (or at least hope) you are using an engine hoist.
If not, you could throw together some sort of strong framework and hang one of these from it.
Use intake bolts at 4 corners (longer than the bolts that hold the manifold) and your levelling problems are cured.

Well...... actually not but the idea is good

Right now I only use a jack and a 8 x 8 piece of wood. I will put the new tranny tomorrow

Thanks
