paint questions

Hello, I've just recently inherited a 77 c10 my grandpa bought new. The truck is in decent shape but needs to be restored. I'm wondering how I find the paint code for the truck, and if there are any sites I can buy spray paint that's a match to the color code?

I plan to eventually restore the truck. But, I'd like to buy some matching spray paint for the time being. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jeremy.

I just dealt with this myself. I found it easiest to just find a paint chip chart and go from there. Here's one for yours: http://paintref.com/graphics/chip/gm...c_ppg_c_01.jpg

There might be a sticker on the glovebox with RPO codes which you could double check with. Example mine is a '79 and has "26L" listed, which is Dark Blue.

Paintscratch.com will do rattle cans of auto paint. Not cheap though.

I can't find a paint code anywhere in the truck, but I'm leaning towards tangier orange.

I can't believe how expensive the spray is. Maybe I should just buy some single stage and learn. It will be good practice anyway.

look in the glove box it should be on the sticker if not there there is a metal tag under the hood with all kinds of codes that should have it

I have the sticker. Just don't see paint. Unless I'm just over looking it

It looks like wheatland yellow, but when I look in the GM Heritage Archive I don't see that color listed.

my experience has been that a 40 year old truck is way too old to still match its paint code, the sun and weather in general has taken its toll on the paint, also the paint itself has changed over the years well at least in California where now they want to sell you water based junk

beautiful step side by the way, please keep it as a step side and you got lucky and still got the handsome round lights which were on the 73-79s, good luck with your restoration, I would focus on the mechanical stuff first anyway, and let the [ahem] patina speak for itself

Go to a paint store and have them use their gun on it. They can match the paint that way.

Bob: I am the original owner of a 77 Chevy ShortBed Pickup. I have every conceivable paperwork on the truck. I know every nut and bolt on this vehicle. On the SPID is the order code of 9V1 (Black) (This is not the paint code) I assure you on the following:

"NOWHERE ON THE VEHICLE OR ON IT'S PAPERWORK IS THE PAINT CODE" (Code 86)-Black

You can also go to www.paintscratch.com and select the year and make, it will show you the color options.

thanks for all the responses. The paint doesn't have to be perfect at all, I just have some surface rust in a few places I need to do something about shortly. Ill probably just sand and prime it, then find get some advanced auto spray paint that's somewhat close to the original color.

I may be ready for nice paint in a few years, at that point I will figure out the original color and do it right. Thanks again, Jeremy.
