In third by 30
I am having some issues in my 79. Just finished the build. Engine is about 375 hp with a turbo 350. When I cruise all seems nice. But when I get on it. I am in 3rd by 30 mph. Also when I first fire it up. Seems to wind out before shifting into 2nd when I take off easy. I already changed the vacuum control module. Could it be the governer?

Check your vacuum modulator line for leaks. Check TV/Kickdown cable for proper adjustment. If all that is correct your modulator may be adjustable, you can try to fine to it to your engines vacuum. If not a TCI 326500 weight and spring kit can be used to calibrate your governor to your application.

Holly 650. Checked vacuum line to modulator and it is holding. Replaced modulator no change. I adjusted the kick down cable. But noticed it does not seem to retract. Is this right?

Re: In third by 30
Kick down cable should have some internal transmission spring retraction.

It seems worse when I really get on it. When I cruise it will wind out a little, but as soon as I get on it, its in 2nd before the tires really get a chance to break loose

The TCI 326500 governor weight and spring kit can be used to adjust shift points to your combination. You will have to fine tune weight and spring calibration to what you want for shift points. You may have to try several calibrations to find the one you want.

Re: In third by 30
It seems to be stuck about half out. Plan to get under there this weekend. What would cause this to not retract?

Re: In third by 30
The cable must be damaged or shredded inside. Easy fix. It should work as smooth as your throttle cable; no dragging or sticking.

Re: In third by 30
Is your vacuum modulator hooked up to full manifold vacuum?
It should NOT be hooked up to ported vacuum.

Re: In third by 30
The Trans was built around 1996. And during this build I had it freshened up. Not sure what that included considering it leaks all over. But it did sit for 3 years after being freshened up before I actually got it on the road.

Re: In third by 30
So if I take the cable off. I should be able to give it a pull and it retract back? Going to take it off this morning to see how it runs without it

Re: In third by 30
Did you put a TransGo shift kit in it recently?

Re: In third by 30
Ok. Not the tree I thought of barking up.
The detent cable should be super smooth. Adjusted at the carb so that it is fully pulled at WOT - this will leave a bit of slack until about half-throttle. If you remove the cable. the link sticking through the hole should move smoothly, yet move as if resisting a spring, and should feel as though it ~stops~ at the end of its travel. If the governor checks out fine, and moves like the sloppy assembly that it is, I'd suspect something going on in the valve body. That's all I got, sorry. I've rebuilt three different TH350's in the past year. Two of which had lost High/Reverse clutch, one was just fine and I was only confirming it.

Re: In third by 30
I pulled the cable off and it does stick a little. But the Trans seems to shift a little better at slow launch. But still in third by thirty when I get on it. Tires spin just a little then shift. I have about 375 hp and should smoke he hell out of the tires

Re: In third by 30
Before I do anything crazy I think I want to try to adjust the vacuum control module. How do I go about this? I heard 1/4 turn out and try. And repeat until I am happy
Thanks

Re: In third by 30
Yup. Screw it out to make it shift earlier, screw it in to shift later. You only get so many turns in until the screws falls inside or jams (ask me how i know). It will only affect light-throttle shifts, it will not affect full-throttle shifts (those are governed by the governor).

Re: In third by 30
It is full throttle shifts that are the issue
