Question How do I remove door panel cage nuts

Hello all! I have some cage nuts in my door panels that are stripped out and some that are broken off. I tried to remove the cage nuts and they won't budge, does anyone know how to remove them? I found out I can replace them with headlight and license plate nylon cage bolts, which is the next logical step. Thanks in advance.

Re: How do I remove door panel cage nuts

They should just be spring-clipped with the springs on the front and rear [in relation to the nose of the truck]. Remove the door panel for access, squeeze one side in and it should pop off.
But if the factory spotwelded them in, then I'm a liar.
I was able to get replacement spring clip nuts [1/4"-20 IIRC] at Ace Hardware. Mine just clipped right back in.
Unless you have a '72 -- then IDK.

Re: How do I remove door panel cage nuts

I had a couple that were stripped on my Blazer....I have some spare doors for parts so I just screwed a ¼-20 screw in and punched them out from the outside.......luckily they came out fairly easily and when I put the good ones in the door they stayed put...and I was able to install the door panels and all the screws.

I painted the screw heads black and machined some beveled washers out of black Derlin plastic...the ones that came with the door panels were too big for my liking...

Re: How do I remove door panel cage nuts

I believe the door panel nuts are spot welded into place. The armrests have cage nuts.

On my '68 C/10 [Fremont] they were clipped, but production proceedures can change from plant-to-plant and year to year.

Re: How do I remove door panel cage nuts

I have ground them flat, thin

and then welded a new nut on the back.

Mine were missing. Bought them from home depot and I used the other welder, JB WELD. Holds great.

Re: How do I remove door panel cage nuts

They were barely spot welded on mine. I put new door panels on a week or two ago. Used a hammer an old screw driver and knocked em out. I'm going to try using some wide Velcro on the bottom instead of screws to hold the bottom edge of the door panel in.

Re: How do I remove door panel cage nuts

Ok, so got back at it this weekend. On the bolts that were stripped and rusted in I dremeled off the heads, removed the panel and then used a 5 lb hammer and flat blade screw driver to push out the cage nuts. It took 2 or three blows to get them out but it worked. Thanks all!
