TH200-4R in a '64 - Trans and Install Questions

Hey guys!

The I6 in my '64 C10 1/2 ton is tired and getting swapped for a '65 283 and I'm now planning on a TH200-4R. Going to look at a trans tomorrow and the guy didn't have much to offer beyond, "it worked fine when I pulled it out of my Blazer and it is complete." I've done a bit of reading, but still have questions.

First: What do I need to look for on this TH200-4R? I read there are some years that are better than others, but it's going to be gone through anyway, so what should I know?

Second: My '64 currently is the standard 3 on the tree arrangement. What do I need to know about making the column shift work with this OD trans? I don't want to switch columns and can make some cover plates or whatever needs to be done.

Any help would be appreciate here guys!

On a side note... searching for threads gets a little tough when these transmissions are called TH200-4R's, 200r4's, 2004rs, and so on and so forth. So if there's a good thread that I'm missing in a search, please point me in the right direction.

I'll add another question...

Torque converters: I plan to tow with this truck on occasion (read once in a blue moon), maybe a small car on a trailer or a load of building supplies that might be too large for the fleet side short bed. Do I really need to opt for a "Truck/Towing" converter just for the few times I'll maybe pull a trailer with a load? I need to be able to use the truck as a TRUCK, but in the grand scheme of things, I'm not going to be pulling heavy construction equipment or Sherman tanks on a trailer.

Thoughts?

have the mods move this to the engine & drivetrain section. I would say you would need a auto column or a floor shift.

Column swap would be easier for sure. I was thinking I saw a clever way to make the manual shift column work. I could have completely imagined that, though.

Just making sure you know that blazers never came with the 200-4R, only cars had them. No, you do not need a different convertor to tow with it.

Yeah, I didn't think they came with them. That's just all the guy could tell me about them. HA!

I was thinking that a converter specified for towing was a bit overkill for just the occasional load tow. Thanks!

Okay... I just grabbed up a TH200-4R for cheap and it looks really good, as far as I can see with it sitting in front of me. Only thing it's missing is the fill tube because he swapped it over to the other transmission he installed.

Only thing I noticed after I got home was that the output shaft was a tad loose. I've not messed with one of these, but I'm guessing it's normal when the yoke is not installed... orrrrrrr did I just buy a pile of crap? HA!

200 series transmissions don't have a Case Bushing like all other GM transmissions too support the Output Shaft, A lot of movement is normal.

PHEW! Okay! Good deal! I was thinking that was the case, but freaked out for a moment.

It was suggested that he thought it might have come out of a Monte Carlo. The tag has a number that reads 094-2T85CH1084. What do I have here? Not sure I'm looking at the right numbers.

Answering my own question here. Looks like the transmission has the dual mounting pattern confirming what the guy told me, probably 85 Monte with a 305, based on the CH code.

Now I need to figure out this locking/non-locking thing and the electrical portion.

I used a bowtie overdrives lockup kit, wired it up to 2 switches- one would let the trans lock by itself in 4th, the other was a manual lockup whenever I flipped the switch. Don't run in 4th without lockup.
