Boyd's tank install question

So I got my new Boyd's tank in the other day and tried installing it today only to find out it won't fit between the frame rails. I measured inside the frame rails and it is much narrower toward the bumper end of the frame than it is by the differential. Is this normal or is my frame bent? Also, it seems I am missing a crossmember. There is nothing between the crossmember by the differential and the rest of the frame. Is this major concern? Back to the gas tank, should I just use a grinder and clearance the frame a little so it will fit?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Boyd's tank install question

The tank is not supposed to be able to fit in between the frame rails. It is meant to be bolted to the frame from the bottom. The only way it will fit between the frame rails is if you remove the rear crossmember and slide it in.

Re: Boyd's tank install question

That's how I was installing it. The front of the tank was rubbing on the inside of the frame and would not go all way up. There was enough clearance at the rear but not at the front.

Re: Boyd's tank install question

My frame measures 27 3/8" on the inside of the frame rail at the rear by the differential and 26 1/4" inches at the rear, where the rear crossmember should be.

Re: Boyd's tank install question

I would pick up a crossmember to bolt into your frame. There should be one. Also, I removed my crossmember and slide the tank in between the rails. I did that because:

Frame off restore, easy to do
Gets it tucked up higher so you don't see it
helps clearance the filler neck from the frame when using a side fill set up
Didn't know any better

I had to notch about 1/4" x 5" out of the suspension crossmember to get the tank far enough forward to get the rear crossmemeber bolted in. Otherwise, easy install. If you need to clearance something for the mounting tabs, clearance the aluminum tabs some to make it more narrow.

Well after looking at yours and Possmguts installs, I'm pretty sure my frame is bent. Now to figure out to get it straight...... Any thoughts on where I can pick up a rear crossmember? Are they sold aftermarket or will I need to find one out of a junk yard or something like that?

lol.. That last reason is the same reason a lot of mine is done the way it is...

Re: Boyd's tank install question

Mine measures 27 7/8" by the trac bar crossmember and 28 3/8" at the rear crossmember which seems to leave the tank plenty of room.

Re: Boyd's tank install question

Mine is mounted between the frame rails. Slid right in after removing the rear crossmember with approx 1/2" on either side. Looks cleaner IMO.

Re: Boyd's tank install question

I built a custom rear crossmember that allowed me to mount all of my Accuair boxes & fuse block on it including the tank. Here it is pictured sitting on top of the frame, I made sure everything will fit before I painted it.

Looks really clean.

I have always used a hydraulic cylinder to bend frame rails out as they are cheap to rent if that helps.
