Installing steering column/shaft question

Installing a new steering column and a steering shaft into my 68 that came as a one piece instead of separate parts like the 69-72 models. Anyway, I need the steering column to slide down about another inch to make everything line up. My question is, are steering shafts suppose to be cut to fit or should they come the right length and ready to install? I just need to know if other people usually have to cut them down a little to make them fit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know why you would need to cut anything, as long as the steering box is in the stock position. I wanted my steering wheel farther away from me, so had to shear the pins in the telescoping lower shaft so it could be pushed into itself, and also had to relocate the switch mount on the top of the housing inside. The column then pushed down til the bell touched the instrument bezel.
