Question for the Silverado guys
Hi guys,
Been on the 67-72 forum for a while now but new to the later model Silverado forums. Just picked up a sweet 2002 Silverado 1500 that I am really excited to own. Even though it's a 1500, it has a hood from a 2500. Anyway there is no insulation on the underside of the hood and the guy I bought the truck from said it isn't needed. Is this true? I have seen a lot of these trucks with peeling clear coat, especially on the hood so I was thinking maybe the insulation would help prevent this. What is the consensus on if the insulation is needed or not? I figure GM put it there for a reason. Does anyone know the part numbers for this insulation on a HD2500 hood? Thanks! |

It's really there for noise abatement rather than thermal control. Peeling paint is a prep or UV issue. K

Re: Question for the Silverado guys
You'll find that a lot of vehicles that have peeling paint are repaints from accident or hail damaged combined with a lot of sun and a complete lack of wash/wax.
Not washing or waxing for 10+ years is enough to help just about any mfg's clear coat start to peel. That said... the roof on my 00 Z71 started to peel after it was about 15 years old, but to be honest, I stopped waxing the truck about 6 years before that and it sat out in the carolina sun 24/7.
