Just bought a 24v viair 330c. Will it run 12v????

So I just bought a viair 330c for really cheap. After I checked out I noticed it was a 24v compressor. Yikes! will it work with a 12 volt system????

I normally check and double check and triple check before buying anything. Did I mess up? Can I just hook it up like a 12v compressor?

Nope, you need 24v to run correctly and even if it was to turn on, it would run at 1/2 speed and likely overheat doing so. Now you know why it was really cheap.

You may be able to buy a 12v to 24v converter, just double check the amp draw.

Good luck, Rg

Or maybe run a 2nd battery to it?

You can install 2 smaller batteries in series in an isolated circuit (they would need an isolated ground path, not the chassis ground) to run the compressor.

There are isolation kits around so they can charge from the alternator but not interfere with primary system.

Here is an example (not a recommendation, just a link to show what I am talking about)
http://www.powerstream.com/battery-i...olid-state.htm

Of course -- 2 batteries, hardware and an isolator would totally defeat the "I got it cheap!" advantage here... but running an isolated system might have other advantages worth considering.

yes, I got the compressor and hooked across my battery to see what it would do. It runs about half speed and I couldn't really feel any air flow out of line. Oh well. I guess i'll put it up on ebay and warn buyers its not for a 12v air bag system.
