47-54 door weatherstripping
helping buddy with his 54 gmc. he bought new weatherstripping rubber from LMC and glued it in according to their youtube how-to. the doors will not close, not even close. striker plate is all the way out already. the rubber is too dense and won't compress. seems like he needs a new rubber style or manufacturer. anybody have any ideas? he grabbed a sample of "D" style hollow stripping with 2 sided tape on the back. it is too wide but looks like a narrower strip like that would work if we can find some.
any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance. |

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
you know, this seems to be the umpteenth complaint about that company's weather stripping. I can't imagine they're not getting complaints as well @ corporate.
Working in QA/QC for a large CPG/beverage company, something like this would be triggering the alarm bells at my company and Sr. Mgmt would be screaming for a solution. Granted, I have ordered from the mentioned company have have been fairly satisfied with both parts and service, but it seems like this one complaint always seems to surface. *sigh* Done with the rant... Thanks as always DWCSR for the advice. |

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
I just went through this also. If you insist on using the original style, get the smaller size from Steele Rubber Products. Universally recommended.
After a failed attempt to use the original style, I gave up and just bought a roll of generic 7/16" square foam self-adhesive weatherstrip from my local home improvement store. I'm happy with the fit and ease of installation.

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
thanks for the advice guys. we will check those out and see what we can make work. dwcsr, are the recommended ones a lot softer than the other like he has? they seem to be too dense of a foam to squish out.

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
ok, thanks DWCSR. do you know from experience if the recommended seals will allow the doors to close right out of the chute? just curious. seems like a lot of guys have had the same problem with the seals like my buddy bought. since they are "order, wait, pay brokerage, pay dollar difference" scenario for Canada, we want to get the right/best fitting seals next time. that glue is like concrete to get off, no wonder they call it cement.

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
wow this was just in time, I am about to place a big order at LMC today that included door weatherstripping. I will delete that and order it elsewhere per the above recommendations.
I also have LMC door seals on my 71 C10 and have trouble closing the passenger door. Will look into replacing that as well. |

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
My advice, (from experience on my 56), I bought LMC's, Steel Products and finally Soff Seal. The ONLY one I got the doors to close with was Soff Seal. And the doors are adjustable finally. Good luck.

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
The one on the left is 1/2 base width by 11/16 tall. The second one, ( the one I use LP-40-A) is 9/16 base width and 1/2 tall. Its very important that its in the correct orientation or nothing will fit. The door will still be a little hard close but once its set for a while closed it forms the correct fit and after a short while it will close and open like you want.
follow these directions and it should work out for you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SajNpDzRTdU LP-40 is the heavier seal version of the LP-40-A they are both metros Supersoft seal |

Re: 47-54 door weatherstripping
Just finished my second door as we speak. Frost King weatherstrip from Home Depot. $30 for enough to do both doors twice. Took about 10 minutes per door. Doors have to be slammed right now, but I expect it to compress. Not feasible for a restoration, but at the price and ease of installation, I'm more than happy.
