Re: Repo 72 doors?

I've never worked in a stamping factory, but I always thought they had huge presses and dies to stamp out body panels . I'd assume that would be way to expensive for a company like them to have exclusive access to those types of machines.

Re: Repo 72 doors?

Southern Kentucky Classics either owns or works with Woodall Industries. I can say that the bed floors that came from Woodall were spot on for the longbed trucks. Quality reproduction from overseas. Looking at the address on Google, it is in the same spot as SKC as I have visited them while stationed at Ft. Campbell.....

I know in the camaro world there are only a few actual manufacturer's with a lot of various
names on the box. I can attest that the AMD panels for the Camaros are spot on..

Re: Repo 72 doors?

SO KY Classics = Woodall Industries same as The Truck Shop = Counterpart. They produce the bedsides everybody likes, and everybody else sells. I have no experience with these new doors, but could assume they'd be a good stamping from what I have seen from them. But, ya never know with this whole "Have them made on the other side of the planet, then hope they do it right" world we live in. Do they even have a 67-72 GM Truck over there to test things on?

Re: Repo 72 doors?

Yeah, I'm interested in knowing. I forgot about this thread. I thought this was the other just recently started here asking the same thing. That one turned into a bunch of comments from members who choose to repair rusted doors. That is what I'd do, if I didn't have rust free doors. That's because the first doors ever produced outside of GM had some issues. They seemed to come a bit shy of being good doors, so I've stayed away. I guess the first batch sold down enough to open the door for a second batch and my questions are, are those Woodall doors and are the next batch (whoever makes them) better?

The manufacturer does use giant presses. The US company that "produces" (means has made, not makes) the part actually does "own" the dies and there is a legal and binding contract protecting their use by the manufacturer. The producers, such as Woodall, are in the business of paying manufacturers to make parts they will distribute to dealers who sell to us. SoKy Classics is a dealer who got into also having parts produced. On parts like doors, it costs so much to produce there is only room for one producer

Re: Repo 72 doors?

I just received my drivers side door shell for my '72 today. I ordered mine from GMCPauls and it came in a MuscleCarGT box. It seems to be of decent quality, but I have no idea as far as fitment yet. I still have to replace my cab floor and do rockers/cab corners before I get to hanging it. If there's any measurements or pictures anybody would need, I can help if someone is looking for something specific to compare to.

I would hang the repo doors before you cut anything. The only fair test is how they hang in the original opening.

Re: Repo 72 doors?

You might want to leave old doors on and work to those till the cab is repaired, then deal with fitting the new doors. At least I would compare both fits before buttoning anything up

Re: Repo 72 doors?

I plan on working on my truck this weekend, so I'll try to get a few pictures. I may try hanging it now that someone mentioned it to see how/if it fits in the factory lines. I really envy everyone that lives in more populated areas, you still have access to decent original sheetmetal. I've been looking for the last four months and nothing. My original door would've needed to be reskinned, had the bottom inside patch done, and substantial hinge mount repair as the metal was starting to pull out of the shell. I figured this would save me some work, but everything I've seen about the repop doors is they either fit perfect or the complete opposite requiring some metal work to fit. I hope I'm in the first category.

Very good idea to test fit before replacing the other pieces, thank you.

Re: Repo 72 doors?

I would try the new doors on asap. The 72 doors I got wouldn't even close, the door literally overlapped the body at the latch edge.

Re: Repo 72 doors?

I did a little work on my truck today and hung the drivers side door shell. Rather than retyping everything, I took an excerpt from my build thread. I made a picture album as well for many additional photos not in that post, they can be found here.

randy500, I should have taken pictures before I hung the door but I didn't. I tried taking some as best I could, they're at the end of the aforementioned album. If you still want some different ones, I'll do it when I take the door off again.

I'm not a body man at all, so this truck is going to be my learning curve. However out of the box, I had it bolted up and after twenty minutes or so of adjustments, I think I have it sitting relatively decent. The hinges were still bolted to the cab in the same position the factory doors were hung, so any adjustments were done on the door to hinge location. My hinges definitely need to be rebuilt though, and I know that will require more adjusting, but I think it fits decent for the most part. The only major issue I had was the top hoop hitting part of the drip rail in the dead center, but the drip rail itself was sagging in that spot, once that was clearanced, the door was able to shut fully without hitting anything else and resting on the little rubber bumpstops. The rear door to cab gap is about 1/4", I think I could slide it back a hair more, however I looked at my '69 GMC with stock doors and it had about the same gap, so maybe it's acceptable? All of my door pics can be seen HERE.

The repro door discussion can be found here.

Re: Repo 72 doors?

The doors I got didn't have the raised detail on the bottom inside corners like the doors shown have so it looks like there are some different stampings out there

My thoughts are that this is an updated stamping and I am tempted to buy a door from Summit that if I didn't like I could return. I bought a door last august from Classic Heartbeat, it doesn't have the triangle raised portion in the lower front inside corner(it was obviously older stock, I picked it up in person). I like it well enough but since I installed the latch I think the latch mount is a bit low...

Thanks again for the update. Could you mount the latch and see how that works out? I think mine is a bit low on my repro door which is a bit different from yours.
