Powder Coating Door Handles

Curious if anyone has powder coated their door handles and if so, do they still function properly and does the powder coating wear well? Specifically the button. Took mine to a powder coating place here and they refused to do them for me, said it wouldn't work.

Hard to say but the clearances don't appear that tight, I'm not sure why they wouldn't work. Have you tried disassembling them though? As I recall I wound up making 1 set from 2, they didn't come apart in a friendly manner.

I had my originals rechromed and then replaced the buttons with reproductions.

The button always scuffs on mine right from first press. That "top of button" scuff might wear the powdercoat, hard to say. It scratches the chrome, anyway.

If you've got a sacrificial pair why not try painting them first? That'd reveal any areas where the clearances are so tight as to be affected by a coating.

Me thinks one would have to remove that old Chromium Hexavalent shiny no-stick stuck and no one wants to deal with it.

Not to say you could not media blast, and then take em down to the powder coater.

The stuff underneath is a pot metal so be careful.

I took my '66 door handles completely apart and had them powder coated. It worked out fine. Sorry - I don't have a good picture.

Ended up getting them Teflon coated. My brother-in-law built a helicopter for Vince Gillian and they used Teflon on a lot of parts, they came out great. Another plus, if I ever need to cook an egg on my door handles, it won't stick!

They look nice! Please do follow up later and let us know if the thumb button survives without a lot of sratching/scarring. My chrome scratches, so I'm wondering how anything else will do, since chrome is pretty hard...
