valve cover holes 2 - 3 ???

OK,

This may be a simple question to some of you, but being the perfectionist that I am, it is a concern for me. I am cleaning up my engine compartment and will probably get to the point of installing my Mr. Gasket chrome valve covers in the next month or so.

Over the weekend I realized the there are three holes in the stock valve covers 2 on one, 1 on the other and most of the aftermarket chrome ones only have one hole on each.

Is the normal thought here simply to keep the breathers in place and then add oil in one of the breather holes instead of having a separate oil fill hole?

Just need to know. Thanks!

Yes, all you need is the 2 holes.....1 for the breather, & 1 for the pcv valve. I just add the oil to 1 of the holes, after popping the pcv out. crazyL

Yup....put the PCV at the driver side front of engine valve cover hole, and put the breather in the passenger side rear of engine valve cover hole. Then your engine will suck air in through one side, and release it back into the intake on the other side.

adding oil...

Imagine that adding oil is then done much easier in the more forward hole on the driver's side, no? Better go to my collection of pix to see how this looks on everyone else's rides.

Yup, just yank the PCV valve out and pour the oil in through a funnel. That is what i do on mine......pics on my website, the link is in my signature.

An old post, but now pertinent to my putting the valve covers back on. What is correct?

My valve covers (orginal) are notched on one side. I took that to mean that side towards the intake manifold. Someone else told me that there is actually a heighth difference in the valve cover from side to side, and was so the rocker arm didn't constantly hit the inside. Yet another person told me that on a 350, I could put them on anyside, anyway, that I wanted. I did not get a good picture of which way they were when I bought it, but not sure that it was correct even then.

2 holes is all ya need! In spring I like to put half the oil in each side to wake up the rockers!

Maybe someone can explain to me why it is then that there are no holes on some vehicles? If the holes are there to allow for/create more breathing...what would be the advantage of not having them?

I am still confused on the whole point of this, even though I now know the two holes will be fine.

Guess I could have been more specific...

In my collection of photos it seems that I often see 350's without the holes or the breathers installed. So that is my question (and shows my ignorance in the realm of engine buidling). Why do some people choose to run without the breathers?

Never thought of that before. ?

Some one out there has to be running this kind of valve cover!!

The old 238s & 327s had no holes in the cover(prior to 1968). These engines had a breather tube in the front of the intake manifold, & the pcv was routed to the rear of the block(next to the distributor). the pcv actually screwed into the rear of the carb, or was in the hose (2 brl or 4 brl).The baffle was under the intake manifold. If you go back a few yrs more, there was no pcv.....just a road draft tube, & a vent ube on top of the intake.(not too good for emissions). CrazyL
