battery light problem
My 2006 Silverado 1500 has a problem with the battery light that is getting worse. On startup(sometimes) the battery light stays on. At first it would happen once a month or so but it is happening much more frequent now. When it happens the gage shows it is charging normal but the battery light is on. If I turn off the engine and restart, then the light goes out. Very confusing as the system is charging normal when the light comes on. Any ideas or experience similar? TIA

Re: battery light problem
thanks for the reply 'dude'. If you are correct, would the solution be to replace the alternator?

Re: battery light problem
I'm almost thinking ignition switch internal contacts. They get corroded from use and the crud creates a voltage drop. After a while it gets enough current flow to cluster so that it reads correct battery voltage

Re: battery light problem
68c15,thanks for the input. But I would think if switch corrosion was causing the problem, that it would also show up on the analog gage in the dash. One thing that confuses me is that when the problem shows up the gage shows everything normal(15v charging)-just that the battery light stays on.

Re: battery light problem
Here is an update on the battery lite issue. I bought my truck 2 yrs ago and had no idea how old the battery was. I decided separately that I didn't want to go thru a rough winter with a battery of unknown age and condition, so I installed a new 5 yr battery a few days ago. Instantly I noticed that the engine cranked over much much quicker(I mean a lot quicker). This told me that the old battery was noticeably weaker. At the same time the battery lite issue disappeared. My thought is that the battery light is part of a circuit that senses a low voltage situation and the lite comes on when battery voltage drops below a set threshold(mine always came on at startup where the voltage drops a lot). If the problem resurfaces, I will post further but at this time I think the battery lite probably was working as designed and I had a weak battery.
