Rear suspension bounce
What would cause the rear suspension on my truck to bounce? It happens when I go over a bump at low speeds. I believe its stock with coil suspension and I replaced the shocks all around with monroes a month or two ago.
Front seems fine. Just rear bounces. |

A bad shock or broken mount.

Re: Rear suspension bounce
Worn out shocks. I fixed mine with Gabriel "Coil Overs". They made a world of difference. I went ahead an put the same type on the front, and low and behold, the front end cornering dive went away. I'm not in any way trying to sway you toward this product, (many companies make the same type) but it worked for me.

Re: Rear suspension bounce
He said, he believes it is stock.
Where did you purchase the shocks, and have you loaded the bed since you've replaced them? You may bought a shock that wasn't rated to handle the truck, purchased a bad shock, or have broken mounts as stated. It'd be hard not to see broken mounts while installing them though. Did this just start happening, or has it been like this since the install? |

Re: Rear suspension bounce
Even at stock height as much of an angle the rear shocks are at results in a less effective shock. If you have the lower end Monroe shocks I'd say they are just not up to the task, or one is bad already.

Re: Rear suspension bounce
KYB Gas Adjust Shocks are a good price and worked great for me on my K20. Just installed them a couple weeks ago. High pressure gas shocks would work well to control the bounce of a coil spring.

Re: Rear suspension bounce
Stock height. I haven't loaded it up since new shocks were installed. I didn't notice any broken mounts. Everything bolted up fine
The reason why I replaced them was because of the bounce. The front tightened up. The rear is better but still bounces. |

Re: Rear suspension bounce
Have you owned one of these trucks before, or rode in any others? You could certainly have an issue, or it can just be the way these trucks are and you've been spoiled by 40+ years of suspension technology advancement.
Bounce may have a different meaning to you as to others. Does the rear suspension continue to travel up and down after you hit a speed bump, as if it's solely supported by the coil springs? Does it have excessive circular motion travel (track bar bushings being gone or a broken track bar could cause that) |

Re: Rear suspension bounce
Also, the generic bounce test states: go to one corner of the vehicle, and force the corner of the truck down. It should move downward, come back up, and then settle back to its resting position. If it bounces more than 2 times, chances our your new shocks are toast.

Re: Rear suspension bounce
I have oned one for about 10 years and it doesn't bounce as much. I haven't driven it as much. It has a leaf spring rear suspension. My father's doesn't bounce like this either.
I suspect the springs aren't stock. Maybe the previous owner added some heavy duty springs and I've gotta get heavy duty shocks to compensate. Or like sangell stated, maybe these shocks aren't up to the task. Bounce tested and the thing bounces 2 or 3 times |

Re: Rear suspension bounce
Which Monroes did you get? Sounds like you may need stouter rear shocks, yours may not have enough rebound control.

Re: Rear suspension bounce
Easily solved. Put 200# in the bed. An empty bed never rides smooth on a truck, its made to carry weight and feel right doing so.
