Leaf spring c notch

1971 gmc c20 leaf spring rear end help will a regular bolt in c notch bolt in just like on a coil spring rear end and I would like to tow a little here and there nothing crazy just to use my truck as a truck when need be. Should I bolt and weld in a c notch then box it in as well? Any advice/ pics would be greatly appreciated I'll try and post pics of my truck soon I'm still new to this forum.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

How low is it in the rear? I dropped my 69 short step with a DJM flip that netted just over 7". With 500# or so in the bed it doesn't usually hit...

If it's just shackles, no flip needed. Or 4" springs same story.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

I still have my leafs off still bolting them in with the flip kit and new poly bushings but I'm pretty sure by the way it looks I'm ganna be sitting on the axle or at least very close so probably not a good ride. I haven't seen many pics of our body style of truck with c notch and leaf springs.

Oh I'm not sure if it makes a difference but it's a long bed.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

I'm thinking of going with the cpp HD c notch and then boxing in the frame after. Anyone have any experience with the HD notch?

Re: Leaf spring c notch

I flipped mine with leafs for just over 7" drop. I have not C-notched it. I removed OEM bumpstops and axle pads. I put the small poly bumps that came with the DJM flip kit on the rails. I used stock length front shocks all the way around and drilled the shock mount in the rears second hole for a more vertical mounting.

I am pleased. Only future plan is to remove the DJM flip stuff and just weld spring pads now that I have played with pinion angle to desired effect. I think the planned 427 will be too much power for the flip kit and welded and braced pads will be better.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

Wow 7" and no c notch, I'm really close to setting all four wheels on the ground and then I'll se if it really needs a c notch but I'm leaning towards one. Do you have any pics of yours? Of the frame to axle clearance? I think I might do te same with the shocks.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

I would not recommend a bolt in C-notch. Absolutely not if you plan on towing. Just this weekend I boxed my frame in after my bolt-n in notch cracked, my frame split along with it.. I knew I should have boxed it in when I first bolted in the C-notch as it looked way underbuilt.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

Ok so today I finally got it setting on the ground and its sitting on the bump stomps so I'm going to need to notch it. Are there any weld in notch kits that don't mess with the floor of the bed?

Re: Leaf spring c notch

I did a lot of what Mike C did. I used the DJM flip kit and the heavy duty C-notch from Performance Online (POL) with some front-length shocks in the rear. You don't have to mess with the bed of the truck unless you're doing more than a C-notch. I have ECE's drop shackle set to the "less dropped" position, but I do contact the frame on passenger side when driving (with the bed on). However, I haven't yet fixed the pinion angle, and I'm going to lift the passenger side up an inch by replacing the drop shackles with the stock shackles. Hope some of that info helps you.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

Here is my truck. I don't have any with bed off. If I were to notch now, I think I would just cut in 5" pipe 1 1/2" into the frame or so and fully weld then box inside of rail for a 18" or so.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

I thought about doing the pipe notch too. I would really like 2-2.5" of clearance.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

My 1970 C20 with axle flip and notch(I had to as frame was banging rear end). I bolted and tack welded mine in. I used the DJM kit and it worked on C20. 3" drop spindles also. Loaded mine down last week with no ill affects and it never hit the stops coming home(5 leaf springs)

Good thread on doing this.

Re: Leaf spring c notch

Your truck is sweet thanks for the pics. Any chance you have a pic of your c notch? What one did you use and did you have to mess with the lower shock bracket bolt on the top shock mount?

Re: Leaf spring c notch

I have a shot where I relocated the top shock bolt so it was more vertical.
