I was looking to replace my original points distributor with an HEI type. I found a "CFR Performance - HZ-D6001" HEI distributor on Amazon for $64. Any advice on this manufacturer? Thanks..

Welcome to the board!

I have no experience with that distributor. I have, however, had experience with both the Accel, and Proform GM licensed distributors. The Proform one was a much better build quality compared to the Accel. Both come in between $120-150 depending on where you find them.

Some folks have had good luck with the Skip White distributors, which are inexpensive as well.

It's not a drop in and go installation, as the wiring needs to be changed to facilitate a full 12 volts to the distributor. The current wiring has a built in resistance, that will not allow the HEI to function well, if at all.

The CFR ones are cheap, I bought one for a demolition derby truck cause it was cheap. When I got it I didn't even use it due to how it was built. In the long run it'll be cheap to buy a Accel, MSD, or Proform. The Accel and MSD are sold at almost every Advance Auto in America so if you have issues you know you can find parts fairly local.

I got an OE of an 83 chevy van at my local pick ur part. Distributor, cap and wires for about $60, I even got the cable that goes to the ignition (because it had the terminal and I knew it was the correct gauge). Truck runs great and idles a lot smoother.

I got a Skip White one as a cheap go between before getting something better and it has been going strong for three years now. Cheap and lucky, I guess.

Buy yourself a 12volt 30 amp relay with the plug and 6inches of wiring included, from ebay. I paid 10.00 for two of them new. Use the old power resister wire to turn on the relay, without removing the resister. Run a new hot lead fused from the battery to the relay, and then relay to the distributor. Just did this upgrade 2 months ago, working good.
