49 GMC on s10 frame th4OO help

Building a 49 on s10 frame with a pretty radical 383 stroker. I have a th400 lined up for 150 bucks but its the long shaft not the short. Anyone know if it will work?

hmmm....might be a better question for the engine/drivetrain section. Good luck w/your search.
But then again i'm sure someone might be able to answer your question.

long tailshaft? not sure it matters long or short, only should matter to driveshaft length really. since you are moving the engine back you will need to make a trans crossmember anyway, and make a driveshaft anyway.

thats just my cruddy opinion based on my limited understanding of the long vs short tailshafts, which is a big deal to use in a chevelle but not such a big deal in a truck you are making new engine and trans mounts and driveshaft.

and I will say it in pittsburghese: get dahn nere an nat and yinz can use the tranny, I's stunned!

Your pittsburgese is very fluent lol. I bought an ezchassis kit with a 400 cross member. As long as the mounting points are the same I think I should be good. Ed didn't ask me which tailshaft I have so I assume the cross member bolts in the same spot. This is my first Chevy build so I'm not sure on their trannys. Everything up till now had a c6 on it and the tailshaft of those always mattered

Re: 49 GMC on s10 frame th4OO help

Since you will have to build a driveshaft anyhow the longer tail shaft is just that = longer.

If you were hardcore on having a short tail shaft you could pull the guts out of the trans, swap tail shafts and extension housings and go again. It may not be worth the effort and cost though.
