Conflicting info on Rear Mail Seal.....

Okay, Im rolling an 86 C30, crew cab 454/2wd

Im getting ready to do a clutch soon and want to do the rear main while the tranny is out...

BUT, Is it only back there on a one piece seal? 2 piece seals require oil pan removal instead????

Id like to order everything ahead of time so its all here ready to go rather than waiting a week for something to arrive whilst the truck is all torn up.

Ive read that 1986 was the cutoff for the one piece and the 2 piece seals were only in pre-86 trucks... elsewhere I read the that was only SBC engines..... nothing solid on the ol' 454

I have a mfr date in December of 1985 but is 86 model year

is there another way to tell which seal you have?

Re: Conflicting info on Rear Mail Seal.....

Your 454 has the 2 pc rear main seal. The SBC got the 1 pc seal in '86.

The 454 mark IV block with the 2 pc seal ran through at least '95

Mark 4 stopped in '90, then 5 years of Gen V, '96+ engines are Gen VI block; V & VI are one-piece. Super Chevy has a decent article on the differences, this pic is from there.

Good stuff
Thanks

Looks like I'll put it off for later... or until it leaks

I stand corrected on some of my information. Anyhow, yours is 2 pc, assuming it is a '86.
