Re: Isn't this illegal?

I bought a cab from a guy in Ft Wayne once. I think he probably bought and scrapped these trucks regularly. Wonder if it's the same guy...

Well considering his special spelling skills (titless) I'd say he's not the sharpest pencil in the box .

Re: Isn't this illegal?

Yes, that is illegal.

When I went to the CHP for my inspection. I disclosed that I removed the tags from my old cab before I scrapped it, and asked if he wanted them. He said, "No that's not necessary, but they'd make a nice momento to hang on your wall, just don't let them wind up on another vehicle".

He also didn't remove the VIN from the cab I had swapped. He said, " I'll let you remove them because I don't want to hit the gas tank. Again, just don't let them wind up on another vehicle".

Re: Isn't this illegal?

They are sold all the time as "historical documents".

Somebody would have to prove the fraud.

state to state the laws vary. That is why it is not allowed here. Proof of fraud is not needed as it is illegal to remove them at all.

Re: Isn't this illegal?

Indina looks down on doing that, I know someboys that are brothers each had a large salvage yard and they were selling vin tag & titles but keeping the car body to sell parts of of. one morning about 8 am the FBI raided all the yards at once took all the owner to jail they each end up doing 3 to 5 years each. and they all were 60+ years old. ended up close most of the yards I think maybe 2 left now.so I would think this guy will be getting a vist from them.

Although Illegal and I do consider it something wrong to do 3-5 yrs. is a little out of hand, especially considering what SOME people get away with these days.. They must have proved intent...

Re: Isn't this illegal?

There are sections on CL for prostitution so I don't think CL is very concerned about it.

www.backpage.com is even more blatant, and with much better pictures.

CL has been known for lots of scams, robberies, even murders....

Lots of things are illegal but that doesn't seem to worry the offenders much. Even non-users like myself could score whatever drugs we wanted within hours if we decided to.

Good eye though! Makes for an interesting thread.

It sure is bold selling them this way. That type of thing belongs under the table.

Re: Isn't this illegal?

Chances are someone is bound to pay a very high price because of this CL post, either the seller or the buyer, lol. More than likely the seller is not an undercover but thinking this way keeps me out of trouble, lol.

You can buy rosette rivits on ebay , they've been on there for awhile at $20.00 each the seller is in Russia and 6 weeks for shipping . He has a 100% approval rating
So ebay must know about it ?

I just looked again there are 16 listings

Re: Isn't this illegal?

I went to Iola, WI car show, swap meet this year and some guy had a plastic file box with nothing but titles for everything from the 1920's to the 1950's. It was neat looking at them.

Re: Isn't this illegal?

The rosette rivets are easily available because other car makers used them for body tags other than serial/vin tags.

My Dodge truck has round head rivets holding the vin tag and they are OE. Should they be outlawed?

No but the DMV should be able to confiscate your vehicle and fine you $100K per day.

Hey, that's what the EPA did to that one farmer that cleaned out his stopped up ditch. He was fined severely for "disturbing a wetland" and had to take it all the way to the Supreme Court. No idea if the govt. ever paid him back any money.

Titles amount to another tax....I haven't heard of many car thieves stopped because of it. If titles were so great at stopping theft, we wouldn't need insurance, locks, hidden switches, or GPS tracking. We'd also demand title requirements for all our possessions.

Re: Isn't this illegal?

At the end we can say whenever goes through our head but the truth is that we DO NOT KNOW for sure what will happen. I think that is you are caught with "rossette" rivers or with car titles and vin numbers would be a strong indication that you are up to no good but ir would have to be proven in a court of law. So as long as you are documenting everything you are doing and you are not stealing any trucks, you should be fine. That is just my $0.02. Now, why in the work would someone want to buy a vin and car title in FL? I mean, I can see it when you bought someone else's cab to replace your and you want to swap the VIN numbers, but why buy a VIN and a car title? Just seems too odd to me. But being paranoid keeps me out of trouble.
