Wiring in a neutral safety switch
I am converting my 59 with a 235 engine into an auto. The truck has a foot operated starter motor and I want to fit a neutral safety switch. With no solenoid circuit to wire into can anyone give me a clue as to how it can be done?

Re: Wiring in a neutral safety switch
Are going to use a 2 speed auto original column or late model column or floor shifter?

Re: Wiring in a neutral safety switch
Without changing to a later truck or a car starter with a solenoid you can't do it as the neutral safety switch goes in the wire from the key to the solenoid but having to reach over with your foot to hit the starter pedal on the floor should serve as a reminder to put the car in neutral. The thought being that you don't usually unintentionally hit the starter on that rig without being prepared but a guy hopping in and turning a key on a truck or car with key start often doesn't think about it all he just hits the key.
That is probably the primary reason that 54 trucks have key start as they were the first year with an automatic from the factory.

Re: Wiring in a neutral safety switch
I may be oversimplifying this but, the foot starter isnt going to fit the automatic bellhousing, right? I cant say I have ever seen a stomp starter on an automatic. so you will need a non foot starter anyway, which means either a ignition switch with a start position or a starter button, both of which can be outfitted with a mechanical nss.

Re: Wiring in a neutral safety switch
So far I've installed a new column with a shifter on it. I haven't offered up the powerglide yet to see how it fits with the foot switch linkages. I was thinking an upgraded starter motor and key would be what I needed to do to solve the neutral safety switch problem.
